Ashlie and Stephen go to the gym to prepare for a half-marathon for charity. Who’s going to be better prepared?

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video and do the first Task. Before continuing with the rest of the activities, watch the video again. If you need help, you can read the Transcript at any time.

Task 3

'Unless' means 'If ... not'. For example:

  • You're not going to finish the race unless you start training hard.

This means:

  • You're not going to finish the race if you don't start training hard.

Hello Thomas,

You can use the transcript (available on the page - just click on the word 'Transcript') to help you to follow the text. As you improve you can use this less, or not at all, but it is a useful tool to help you improve.

For tips and advice on learning English effectively take a look at our Help section. The FAQ page has suggestions regarding listening as well as other aspects of learning.

ı am doing sports to keep fit

Hi,
I watched most of the videos. One thing, that when I finish watching 4-5 of them, after that (may be in hours or another day) ı trying to remember the key points, Unfortunately I could not remember each of them. Although I know what day talking about in video.
So, is there any effective way to solve this issue (by watching and listening for learning), because we are giving our time for this. and when if we could not catch any thing it will be problematic.
do you prefer some tricks to solve this problem? THANK YOU SO MUCH

Hello sharifullah,

I'd recommend you read through our Getting started and Frequently asked questions pages and follow the advice there. I'd especially recommend you keep a vocabulary notebook and that you use the transcripts. Have a go and then let us know if you have any other questions.

Good luck!

All the best,

I've learned so much English by watching "words on the street", It's funny and really interesting! I wish I could watch new episodes, do you think it could be possible?
thank you very much,Elena

Hello!

Ashlie said at 0:20, "Come on, we need the running section". Why did she said they 'need the running section', instead of saying we need to go to the running section?

Thank you!
Regards, Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Ahslie could have said what you suggest, though what she said is a bit shorter. Especially in informal speaking, people often choose the shortest way to say something.
