The assignments on business management consist of two assessments. The first one is a group assessment whereby they look at investigating and exploring a company, a business, a UK-based organisation. They can look at overseas as well. There is absolutely no restrictions. And what they do is they carry out an analysis. They have a choice of carrying out a competitive analysis or maybe, for example, an environmental analysis, or a resource-based analysis. So what they have to do is basically absorb and learn and apply what they have learned in lectures in terms of models and theories in application to the organisation, the business, really in terms of the industry it exists in.
SG
What is the purpose of these assignments, if they do a report? Is it to demonstrate that they have understood the theories and can apply them or is there a broader purpose?
SM
Well, what we are trying to do is we’re trying to get them to problem-solve. We’re trying to get them to implement, understand or even conceptualise a certain area within a business in order to find a problem, try and solve the problem, and then, in the real world, how these problems are then going to be implemented and evaluated.
SG
So would the assignments include recommendations?
SM
Yes, certainly we encourage students to come up with recommendations, because it’s, yet again, it’s pushing them to think wider, taking them out of the box. And try and apply other areas of knowledge to an organisation.
SG
So, what, how are these assignments structured? What would be, what are the different steps in the assignment and what would you be expecting in each of the stages?
SM
Well, they would start off with an introduction. They could have, the main body would be a set of findings, various findings would be then split in terms of split headings. It could be based on the company itself, statistics, in terms of performance, … And then hopefully drawing conclusions, based on some of the problems and the models that they have explored,. A conclusion, which is really summarising what they have already done so they would never at that point introduce something new. OK, so we’re summarising. And then recommendations if they have any. References, a list of references. And tables, content of tables, the appendices, so anything they don’t fit in in terms of the word limit, they are able to make use of the appendices.

Hello attiq ur,
I'm afraid I don't fully understand your question. Could you write the sentence out in full please? That will help. It would be good to post the question on a relevant page as well, like this one on the past continuous.
Best wishes,
Peter

Hello ghalia84,
This is a fantastic poem – thanks very much for sharing it with us! I'm afraid we get too many comments every day to be able to correct users' writing, but I will make one suggestion – use 'do' as an auxiliary verb in the question that you repeat several times: 'What do I have to do?'
By the way, you might enjoy our Stories & Poems section, where you can find other poems to read, as well, of course, as stories.
All the best,
Kirk

thanks a lot
Hi, British Council Team
I found some difficulties in solving questions in task 4. I've tried to listen the audio again and again to find the right answer, but she didn't clearly mentione what sort of contents belong to each categories. moreover, I assume there should be more areas in main, yet there are only 3. So I wonder if there is some errors in the task, or am I expected to assign each contents to correct category according to my own consideration?
Hi, I've just finished Task 4 in Case Study. I think that there is an error in the Answers table. The second column, ( MainBody) is fulfilled twice with the same answer (Analysis of Findings) and the Statistic answer is not present. I have to say that I have some problems giving the correct English signification to words that have an ancient Latin origin but due to historical and cultural reasons the modern signification is changed.
Thanks for answering and don't mind correcting my writing..:))
hi
I'd like to improve my language, both writing and speaking.... I am not good at English. I'd like to speak with native speakers without error. I am listening elementary podcast....that i could understand. but when i speak with others i can't speak properly. what shall i do......pls guide me....
Hi Teena Harshan,
It's hard to give specific advice without knowing how you speak at the moment. However, there are some general suggestions that I can make which will help you to improve over time. The most important thing you can do is to speak English as often as possible. To do this a partner is very helpful, so think about the people you know and consider if any of them could be a practice partner for you. It may be that you know someone else who is also learning English and who would like to practise with you, or perhaps you know some people who do not speak your language but do speak English. However, if you do not have a practice partner it does not mean that you cannot practise because it is possible to practise alone. Just speaking English to yourself while you are at home, going about your normal daily activities, can help a great deal with your fluency and can help you to feel more confident, which will help you to cut down your hesitation and give you more confidence when speaking to others.
You can also use the audio and video materials here on LearnEnglish to improve your fluency. After doing the exercises, try listening with the transcript (listening and reading). Then try saying the text yourself, and finally try saying it with (and at the same speed as) the recording. This will help you to develop speed in your speech, which is a key component of fluency. You'll also pick up a lot of language as chunks - words which are often used together in set phrases - which you can use to communicate with less hesitation.
I hope those suggestions are helpful.
Best wishes,
Peter
