in spite of / despite / although

in spite of / despite / although

In spite of, despite and although are all used to show a contrast but there are differences in the structures used with them.

In spite of / despite

After in spite of
and despite we use a noun or a pronoun.

  • We enjoyed our camping holiday in spite of the rain.
  • Despite the pain in his leg he completed the marathon.
  • Despite having all the necessary qualifications, they didn’t offer me the job.

Remember that the gerund (‘-ing’ form) is the ‘noun’ form of a verb.

The only difference between in spite of and despite is the ‘of’.

  • Despite of the bad weather, there was a large crowd at the match.

Although

After although we use a subject and a verb.

  • We enjoyed our camping holiday although it rained every day.
  • Although he worked very hard, he didn’t manage to pass the exam.
  • The holiday was great although the hotel wasn’t very nice.

We can use in spite of and despite with a subject and verb if we include the expression ‘the fact that’.

  • In spite of the fact that he worked very hard, he didn’t manage to pass the exam.
  • Despite the fact that he worked very hard, he didn’t manage to pass the exam.

Even though

Even though is a slightly stronger form of although.

  • We decided to buy the house even though we didn’t really have enough money.
  • You keep making that stupid noise even though I’ve asked you to stop three times.

Like although, even though is followed by a subject and a verb.

Hello,
Imagine a buffet meal, where you can walk around and eat as much or as little of many different types of food as you like. That's what LearnEnglish is like!
We have English learning video and audio, an English grammar reference, many magazine articles for learners, help with IELTS, exercises for Business English and English games. (and lots more!) You can try all of these areas and when you find one that is useful for you, there will be lots more examples for you to work through.
I hope that helps.

I would be glad to help you but I don't know how. I'm new to this website and while I was reading the House Rules I came across this "No personal information"
it's forbidden to put your email. Reason: "for your own safety" .. well thank you for caring about my safety Britishcouncil.org .. But it doesn't make sense to me.
this is a big website with thousands of members and the fact that there's no way for the members to interact, chat and exchange messages makes it kinda lame I mean where's the difference between this website and any regular textbook.

Hello Zed,
I understand your frustration - we are frustrated too! We understand that many of our learners want to chat with each others and we know it would be very useful. The problem is that some of our users are children and we can't put them at risk by allowing them to be directly contacted by strangers on the internet. However, we think we have a solution to this problem, but it will take some time to implement.
To answer your final question, the difference between LearnEnglish and a textbook is that it is free, contains audio and video, is regularly updated, has an active commenting community and interactive games & activities!
Best wishes,
Adam

it's not what I mean. don't get me wrong =p I know your website is very cool, a way better way to learn English than using textbooks I was just trying to express my dissatisfaction about the fact that we .. um .. how to say that (poor English :p) I mean when you are on such a great website and see that there are so many people just like you passionate  about the English language you will absolutely want to  get in touch with them.
I don't know if it's correct to say that but I was being over dramatic or exaggerating I would say.
it's not that of a big deal after all :) and it's great to see that you're concerned about your members. just keep up the good work .. Love your website. thank you adam and all the LearnEnglish team you're really doing a great job :)
zed.

Hello Anahara,
You asked the same question three times on three different pages. It's hard for us to answer all the questions that we see, so can you please ask each question once only?
Thanks,
Adam

It is really helpful. I don't think I can learn this whole stuff in a month or two. It will take a lot of time. I have a problem When I tried to write English I can't write it. I get confused. Can You Suggest me a tip to remember the things which I have learnt from here. I hope you got my point. Thanks to British Council whole Team.
