Hello Lundy!

Both those usages are acceptable in the right places. Without a context, it's impossible to say for sure though.

Hope that helps,

Hi Jay,
It's hard for me to say exactly what will help you improve your writing, because I can't see a sample text from you. I can give you general advice, though.
Take a look at this page of IELTS writing tips and also do some practice tests (Academic or General Training) and compare them with model answers. Most importantly, try to find a teacher with a lot of IELTS experience who can look at your writing and give you specific advice about your problems. Perhaps you are stuck at  band 6 in writing because you're not answering the question properly, perhaps you are not using paragraphs properly or it might be something else. You can try and work it out for yourself by looking at model answers, but a good IELTS teacher can give you the answer quickly.
Best wishes,

Hello susiedung, and welcome to LearnEnglish!

Well, if you're not planning to do the exam until next year, it sounds like you have plenty of time to get ready!

It's difficult for me to give you specific suggestions about your writing without knowing your level now. For that, you need to ask a teacher who knows you or do an IELTS class - the British Council in Vietnam may be able to help you find a suitable class. Writing is difficult to improve without help, unfortunately.

However, if you do plenty of reading, this will help improve your writing, as well as your reading skills. If you look through the comments here, you'll see other students often ask about this - take a look at my reply to kamalvirk as an example.

Hello hodo, and welcome to LearnEnglish!

To use LearnEnglish, you should see the website as a library – just borrow whatever interests you! A good place to start is our Elementary Podcasts. These are short radio shows about different topics. To help your listening, vocabulary and grammar, you can listen to them, read the transcripts, and do the exercises. You can talk to other learners in the comments, too. There is lots of other material in our Listen and Watch section as well. If you want to work on IELTS, take a look around our IELTS section - have a look at the comments on each page, too, for lots of useful tips on preparing for the exam.

Don't forget that we also have a search box. Put a topic you're interested in into the box – like 'meeting people' or 'the present simple' - and you'll get a list of pages about that topic.

We have a lot of different levels on the site, so don't worry if something is too hard – find something easier, and come back to it later. Just try to look at something every day!

Hope that helps,
