Task 1

Section 1 - Conversations in English

"I think I might stop." - Ravi thinks about quitting his Spanish lessons.

Part 1 is based on the Introduction. This section looks at encouraging people.

Suggestion: One way to use this is to read the Transcript, and then do some exercises to help you to learn the common phrases. A good idea is to practise these with a friend who speaks English or is also learning English.

Practice materials: exercise 1

Put the lines of the dialogue in the right order.

Task 2

Section 2 - I'd like to talk about

Section 2 is based on someone talking about something that they’re interested in – it could be anything – a hobby, a person, a place, a thing – something that they know a bit about and would like to share. It helps you to practise speaking for a little bit longer – for example, when you're explaining something, or telling people something about yourself.

Suggestion: The best way to practise is with a friend who speaks English or is also learning English. However, if you can't find someone, you can send us a paragraph in English.

In this section, you heard Pete talking about his grandfather's watch. Do you have a special possession that is very important to you? Write a paragraph describing the object and saying why it's important to you.

There is some useful language to help you on page 5 of the Support Pack.

If you want, you can add your paragraph to the comments on the website.

Task 3

Section 3 - Quiz

Section 3 is based on the Quiz. This helps you to learn the meaning of new words and how to remember them.

Suggestion: You can write your answers in our Support Pack. You might want to use a notebook or part of your folder to make your own word lists and maps.

The quiz today was about different forms of transport.

Practice materials: Exercise 1

Fill in the gaps with the correct forms of transport.

Practice materials: Exercise 2

Match the forms of transport with their descriptions.

Task 4

Section 4 - Your turn

Section 4 is based on 'Your Turn'. It helps you to listen and understand people giving their opinions.

Suggestion: Download the Support Pack and look at the phrases that the people use. Sometimes they don't use complete sentences. Write down notes and then say what you think.

In Your Turn you heard 5 people answer this question: "If you had a time machine, what 'time' would you visit?"

What about you? What do you think about time travel? Would you like to visit the same times as the people in the programme? What time would you like to visit?

We'd like you to tell us your opinion. Add your paragraph to the comments on the website.

For some useful language, download the Support Pack.

Task 5

Section 5 - Carolina

Section 5 follows Carolina – a girl who has come to the United Kingdom (UK) to live, study, and to have fun exploring a different country and culture. Listening to this can help you if you find yourself in a similar situation. You will see that there is often more than one way of saying the same thing in English.

Suggestion: listen to Carolina's conversations with her friends and then do exercises 1 and 2.

Practice materials - Exercise 1

Look at some parts of Carolina and Jamie's conversation at the restaurant.

Put the expressions in the right places.

Practice materials - Exercise 2

Look again at parts of the conversations.

Choose all the phrases that people can say.

Remember: there is always more than one correct answer.

Task 6

Section 6 - Joke

Section 6 is a joke. A joke is normally a funny story you hear and tell someone else. But you can also describe funny things that happen to you. The most important thing is to watch your friends to see if they are enjoying the story or not – then you can make it longer or shorter.

Suggestion: We suggest you do this:

  • Listen to the joke on your computer/mp3 player.
  • Do Exercise 1, in which you put the lines of the joke in order.
  • Then try telling the joke from the podcast.
  • Think of a funny story that you know. Write down the most important words in English (use a dictionary?). Then try telling your joke.

Practice materials - Exercise 1

Put the lines of the joke in the correct order.

Task 7

Section 7 - Tom the Teacher

Practice materials - Exercise 1

Match the question tags to the sentences.

Practice materials - Exercise 2

Fill in the gaps with the correct question tags.

Practice materials - Exercise 3

Match the interjections with the descriptions of their uses.

About time machine I have many dates which I want to visit again. For example I could start training and improve my football skills, after that I would choose one of important competitions and go back to the past to chosen competitions, taking a part in it and try to win it. I would know what actually I need to improve, so my plan would be:
1) I improve my weaknesses
2) I choose the footbal competitions from my life and remeber its date
3) I'm going back to the past and try to win it, again
But I have to say, first of all I need some money. I think loads of people want to have some, so the first thing I would do with time machine it's earning. Like in the film "Back to the future" I would go to the past (or future) with records about results of football matches, then I would bet on some of the results, taking loads of money and come back to my time.
I think I can imagine a lot of different cases which I could do with time machine.

If i had a gime machine, i would go to the future, to see how people live, and the newest inventions, the most rapid means of transport, but i am afraid to go and find lots of pollution, and loss of clean water, lots of diseases caused by the electromagnetic waves of wirless devices, in thst case, i would run away again to the present time.
Thank you

I want to write about Janbiya.
It's kind of traditional dagger abielt a round the wrest of males as a wearing accessories in Yemeni culture.
There are many many kinds of them.
One that we have it's 47 year old. It was been made of antler horns.
It's worth a lot of money .
Other kinds of Janbyias are worth more than ours depending on the kind of horn and which animal it's refers to also it's age of course.
It's beautiful so we use it as a wearing decorations.
It's belonged to my neighbor's father but my father had bought it before 21 years old. it's considered as a family heritage.
I remember when I was child, my father had geven my a faked small one to look like him when I wear it.
Janbyia it have three parts:
Themost expensive part.
It's sharp piece of metal.
it's the big part of it cover the knife and warbs around the wrist .

This is my first attempt to write to you I will be so proud if i get advice and tips.

Hello Salah Alemad,

Thanks very much for contributing this text! It's informative and I found it very interesting, as getting a knife from my father was an important event in my young life as well. I'm afraid we get too many comments to be able to give feedback on long texts like yours, but I can recommend you look up the word 'blade', which I think is better for part 2. Also, for ages you should say '47 years old' ('years' is plural).

If there's any other specific phrase or sentence you want to ask us about, please let us know. Thanks again for contributing this - it's a great text!

All the best,
The LearnEnglish Team

Thank you a lot.

If I had a machine, I would go back to past when I was a child. I want to enjoy things that happened to me. They were unforgettable. Everything was simple, I just played and played day by day. I also want to have a chance to see how the world changes

Could anyone please tell me whats the wrong with,
1. bring me vegitarian pasta please
2. what has the steak got?
both are inside task 5 exercise 2

Hello samiraWije,

For 1, the definite article 'the' goes with 'vegetarian pasta' because it's a specific dish on the menu. 2 is not correct simply because it's not standard; although the waiter might understand it, the normal way of speaking about the food on the plate with the main dish is using 'come with', 'served with' or 'side dish' (especially in American English).

All the best,
The LearnEnglish Team

Hello Mr Kirk,

Thanks alot for your help

If I had a time machine I would visit these days where nature was still unspoiled by human being. Where men go out for fishing and hunting and women for berry picking and seed searching.
