Word on the Street

Word on the Street is an exciting new English Language teaching programme co-produced by the BBC and the British Council.

Word on the Street looks at how English works in everyday life and presents lively aspects of young British culture. Each half hour episode is filmed in a different place in the UK and features drama, interviews and reports to help you improve your English language skills.

Hospital

Stephen suffers a fall at the skate park and Ashlie ends up taking him to hospital. How do you think he copes with his injury? And will the doctors find any broken bones?

Stephen goes to hospital with the help of his sister, but for more serious emergencies, often paramedics are the first to treat the injured. Join Wendy as she learns more about their job.

Sport

Who do you think will win the half-marathon for charity – Stephen or Ashlie? Watch them as they each prepare and then as they run on the big day to find out who wins!

Joe watches the Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Academy side compete and learns more about women’s football in England.

Social Media

Ashlie decides to make a video for her fashion blog to attract more page views, but Stephen has other ideas about what her video should be. Watch as Stephen and Poppy help Ashlie add some spice to her blog. Will it work? Will Ashlie become a star?

Farming

Stephen and Ashlie have a bit of a fright on their way to a farm for a working holiday. Stephen works in the barn and helps rescue lost animals while Ashlie picks some vegetables to make some lunch.

Joe visits some farms in Kent to learn how ice cream is made from cow to ice cream cone, and gets to do something he's always wanted to since he was a child.

Christmas

It's Christmas! Ashlie and Stephen are cooking for their parents, but there's so much to be done. The pair have to buy presents and Ashlie needs to cook the turkey, roast the potatoes and make the stuffing. And Stephen? Well, for Stephen, Christmas is a holiday...

Amandeep visits the famous Fortnum & Mason department store in London to see the Christmas window displays and discover more about one of the most important aspects of Christmas - shopping!

Animals

This time, it's Ashlie's chance for fame. She goes to interview for an acting job, but someone else steals the show! Ashlie's dog, Poppy, goes to the beautician and Stephen finds out how to give a dog a makeover.

It's not just dogs that need love; Joe goes to a London animal shelter to meet some more unusual animals.

Art

Ashlie and Stephen are at an art market to buy things for Ashlie's flat. But the brother and sister can't stop arguing over who can make better art. To settle it, they decide to have a competition. Who is the best artist? And who is the best salesperson?

Reporter Joe explores London's newest art events: pop-up galleries. He interviews the artists and art enthusiasts who visit these tiny temporary exhibitions.

Bestival

Ashlie and Stephen travel to the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England, to attend the famous music festival.

Carmen visits the National Motor Museum to find out about classic British cars and modern eco-friendly cars. 

 

Big Meal

It's Ashlie's birthday and Stephen has promised to cook a Chinese meal for Ashlie and some friends. The brother and sister visit a restaurant in Chinatown looking for some special tips for cooking Chinese food.
Carmen visits Borough market to taste some food from all over the world.

 

Blackpool

Stephen and Ashlie travel to Blackpool, the jewel of the North-West. They have fun at the Pleasure Beach and then visit the ballroom at the bottom of the Blackpool Tower. 

Nick finds out what Blackpool has to offer people in search of traditional and modern seaside entertainment.

Oxford

In this episode, Ashlie and Stephen visit the ancient city of Oxford. While Ashlie takes an exam, Stephen takes some time to get to know a bit about the city and what there is to do there.

Nick meets some students and finds out about life at university in Oxford and London.

Night Out

In this episode, Ashlie and Stephen are determined to have a good night out. 

Carmen visits a pub and talks to some people there to find out why British people like pubs so much.

Transport and Travel

In this episode, Stephen and Ashlie have a friend called Jazz visiting from abroad. They take Jazz on a trip around London to see  the sights and famous places. 

Nick meets a man who lives on the River Thames and a photographer who creates digital visions of London in the future.
