Indoor Sports Scene 2

Ashlie and Ellie have a great time on the indoor snowboarding slope, but it turns out climbing isn't as easy as Stephen thought...

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video. Next go to the Tasks and do the activities. If you need help, you can read the Transcript at any time.

Preparation

Before you watch

Think about the following questions:

  • Have you ever tried snowboarding or rock climbing?
  • Where do people usually do these sports?
  • Are you afraid of heights?

Now watch as Ashlie and Ellie try snowboarding, and Joe and Stephen start climbing.

Transcript

Stephen: OK, what are we going to do next? I know Ellie wants to go snowboarding and Joe wants to go on the climbing wall.

Ashlie: Well, I’ve got a good idea. Why don’t Ellie and I go snowboarding, and you and Joe go on the climbing wall. What do you think, kids?

Ellie: Sounds good!

Joe: Great!

Stephen: We’re here at an indoor sports centre with our cousins Ellie and Joe.

Ashlie: We were going to the beach, but it’s raining, so we’ve come here
instead.

Stephen: That’s the British summer for you! But this is a great place to do fun sports inside.

Ashlie: Come on then, let’s go and have some more fun. We’ll see you guys later. Bye!

…..

Stephen: You need to be fit to be a good climber. I know I’m going to be good at this, so if you’re not sure what to do, just watch me.

Joe: Don’t we need to get the climbing gear on?

Stephen: Oh yes, of course... Excuse me. Hi! We need some rope.

Instructor: Hi, guys. Have you climbed before?

Stephen: Well, Joe’s new to all this so he could do with some help, but I’m a quick learner, so don’t worry about me.

Instructor: Well, let’s get you in some gear. Some harnesses. Your right leg goes through the right hole and your left leg goes through the left hole. Pull this up to your waist for me. There you go.

Joe: OK, what’s this for?

Instructor: It’s to keep you safe. We’re going to fix the rope to the end of the harness and stop you from falling.

Stephen: Come on, Joe, let’s give it a go. Don’t be scared, just follow me. I know I’m going to be a good climber.

…..

Ashlie: Oh, oh, and we turn! Oh no! Here I go! Here I go! How do I stop? That was awesome! And you’re so good at this, Ellie!

Ellie: Thanks! So are you. But I’m freezing.

Ashlie: I know! It is so cold.

Ellie: It’s a bit different from a day at a beach, but great fun!

Ashlie: Shall we have another go?

Ellie: Yeah. I might try turning next time.

Ashlie: Come on then, I’ll race you to the top.

…..

Instructor: Fantastic, Joe! Just move your right foot up to the next hold. Just one more step.

Joe: I made it! I made it to the top!

Instructor: OK, Stephen, I just want you to move your right hand up to the next hand hold.

Stephen: I can’t. I can’t move!

Joe: It’s OK, Stephen, just don’t look down.

Stephen: What do you mean don’t look down? How can I not look down?

Instructor: OK, Stephen, just calm down. We’ve got you on the line. You’re going to be fine.

Joe: Don’t be scared, Stephen! I’ll come and help.

Stephen: Don’t be scared? I’m terrified! Help! Ashlie! Get me down!
