Word on the Street

Word on the Street is an exciting new English Language teaching programme co-produced by the BBC and the British Council.

Word on the Street looks at how English works in everyday life and presents lively aspects of young British culture. Each half hour episode is filmed in a different place in the UK and features drama, interviews and reports to help you improve your English language skills.

Paris

For the first time, Word on the Street leaves the UK as Stephen and Ashlie jump on the train to Paris. Stephen is working hard on his French, but will he be able to communicate when they arrive?

Amandeep tries to work out whether Britain is in Europe or not. She gets some interesting answers from people in England and France.

Hallowe'en

It's autumn in England, and for Ashlie and Stephen that means Hallowe'en! They're holding a fancy dress party for their friends, so first they have to choose their costumes. But will Stephen's magic tricks really be treats?

Meanwhile, Joe finds out about another autumn celebration in the UK - and sees some amazing fireworks!

Animals

This time, it's Ashlie's chance for fame. She goes to interview for an acting job, but someone else steals the show! Ashlie's dog, Poppy, goes to the beautician and Stephen finds out how to give a dog a makeover.

It's not just dogs that need love; Joe goes to a London animal shelter to meet some more unusual animals.

Northern Ireland

Ashlie and Stephen are off to Northern Ireland, the smallest part of the United Kingdom. They visit the famous Giant's Causeway, learn to surf and chase ghosts in some of Northern Ireland's romantic ruined castles.

Meanwhile, Amandeep finds out a little more about the recent history of this area - and meets the young artists who are changing Belfast's look.

Shakespeare

Stephen, Ashlie and Rob are back! In this episode Stephen has a new job; he's playing Shakespeare. Ashlie learns more about the greatest English playwright, while Stephen tries to find out what his part is.

Amandeep visits London’s TheatreLand to go behind the scenes at a famous musical.

Camden

Our presenters Ashlie and Stephen are on a mission to find the perfect birthday present for their mum in London’s Camden Market.

Camden is known as the birthplace of punk music. Our reporter Carmen looks at the origins of punk, its influence on British fashion and how it’s evolving in the 21st century.

 

Christmas

It's Christmas! Ashlie and Stephen are cooking for their parents, but there's so much to be done. The pair have to buy presents and Ashlie needs to cook the turkey, roast the potatoes and make the stuffing. And Stephen? Well, for Stephen, Christmas is a holiday...

Amandeep visits the famous Fortnum & Mason department store in London to see the Christmas window displays and discover more about one of the most important aspects of Christmas - shopping!

Flathunting

Ashlie's sick of where she lives - nothing works and her flat is too pink! Stephen helps her to find her dream home, but makes a terrible mistake when it comes to moving house...

Meanwhile, Amandeep investigates some of the UK's most unusual housing, and sees how we might live 20 years from now.

Indoor Sports

In this episode, Ashlie and Stephen are all set to go to the beach with their two young cousins, Ellie and Joe. But the changeable English weather has other plans and they have to visit an indoor sports centre instead. Ashlie and Ellie go snowboarding and Stephen takes Joe to the climbing wall to show off his Spiderman skills...

Amandeep goes behind the scenes at the BBC weather centre to see how weather forecasts are made and to get to the bottom of every British person's favourite conversation topic: the weather!

In this episode, Ashlie and Stephen visit the ancient city of Oxford. While Ashlie takes an exam, Stephen takes some time to get to know a bit about the city and what there is to do there.

Nick meets some students and finds out about life at university in Oxford and London.

Transport and Travel

In this episode, Stephen and Ashlie have a friend called Jazz visiting from abroad. They take Jazz on a trip around London to see  the sights and famous places. 

Nick meets a man who lives on the River Thames and a photographer who creates digital visions of London in the future.

Loch Ness

Loch Ness is famous all round the world and Stephen wants to try and see the monster. Ashlie thinks there is no monster and is looking forward to learning more about Scotland.

Nick looks at the four nations that make up the United Kingdom.

Big Meal

It's Ashlie's birthday and Stephen has promised to cook a Chinese meal for Ashlie and some friends. The brother and sister visit a restaurant in Chinatown looking for some special tips for cooking Chinese food.
Carmen visits Borough market to taste some food from all over the world.

 

Bestival

Ashlie and Stephen travel to the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England, to attend the famous music festival.

Carmen visits the National Motor Museum to find out about classic British cars and modern eco-friendly cars.
