What is a Critique?
Try this task to understand more about Critiques.
Listen to the discussion between a student (S) and a lecturer (L) and use the words given to fill in the blanks. You can listen to the recording above as many times as you want and pause it if you need more time to write in the answers.
S: So what's this thing, critique?
L: Well, a critique, or an evaluation, requires you to take an object of study – it might be a book or a film, or a piece of equipment – and then to describe it, but also to evaluate it, to say what its strengths and weaknesses are. But from the perspective of your discipline.
S: So I don't just say all the things that are wrong with it?
L: Oh, no. You have to say things that are right with it, too, what it's good for and how it functions.
S: OK. So it's sort of, a balance.
L: Yes, very much so.
S: OK. Thanks.
