World Oceans Day is a day to think about the extremely important role that the oceans play in all our lives, the dangers that are facing our oceans and the actions we can take to protect them.

Do the preparation task first. Then read the article and do the exercises.

There is only one global ocean. This is divided into five geographical regions: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and the Southern Ocean.

Introduction

Seventy per cent of our planet is covered by one huge, continuous body of seawater – the ocean. It holds 1.35 billion cubic kilometres of water. Nearly half of the ocean is more than 3 kilometres deep. The deepest known point of the ocean is in the Mariana Trench, 11 kilometres below sea level. But there may be deeper points that we have not seen, as we have only explored five per cent of the ocean to date.

World Oceans Day

The government of Canada suggested the idea of World Oceans Day at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. In 2008 the United Nations officially recognised the date and it has been growing ever since, from 100 events in 2008 to over a thousand events in more than 120 countries ten years later. The day is celebrated in a variety of ways, including special events at aquariums and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, conservation programmes, art contests and film festivals.

The importance of our oceans

One of the main aims of the day is to remind people of the important role the ocean plays in our lives. Life began in the ocean. And the ocean is home to the majority of plants and animals on Earth, from single-cell organisms to the blue whale. Marine plants provide us with 70 per cent of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean controls the climate, providing heat in winter and cool air in summer. It also provides us with food and medicines as well as transport. No matter where you live on the planet, no matter how far from the sea, your life is dependent on the ocean.

The problems facing our oceans

The most urgent problem facing the ocean at the moment is plastic pollution. Reducing one-use plastic, including plastic bags and plastic bottles, has been an important theme for World Oceans Day for a number of years. Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also a huge problem. Rising sea temperatures have a direct influence on weather patterns and are seen as partly responsible for an increase in extreme weather conditions. An increase in carbon dioxide is increasing the acid levels of seawater and putting many marine organisms at risk.

What we can do to help

On World Oceans Day, wear blue, go on a march, find a beach or river clean-up near you, organise a local event, print a poster and put it in your window, or use the hashtag #worldoceansday on social media. There are so many things you can do on 8 June to join in the celebrations, to remind people about the importance of the ocean in our lives and to make a difference!

Hi, everyone.
It is the ocean that brings balance to all existent life on earth and one of my favorite places to visit. It is the place for my meditations, prays and sometimes leisure, and since i am half-vegetarian, it provides me the healthiest, tastiest and most nutritive variety of food. This article is very useful and informative. To be honest, i did not know that such a day was recognized and established, though i had heard about multiple actions taken by hundreds of groups, people and countries so as to protect the marine life, preserve the environment, reverse or slow down the climate changes process caused by man himself and more. From this day on, I will celebrate World Oceans Day. I will join the leading organization in my country that looks after this matter, I will wear blue and yes i will do as much as i can to make people, not only in my hometown but from anywhere in the world, more conscious of the deadly risks and the sad fate that we are facing if we do not treat the ocean accordingly.

The ocean play a very important role in our lives just as the text described. It is not only important to animals lives but also to human activities and life basics needs.
I think the best way to celebrate the World Oceans Day is making people aware of the importance of keeping it clean, after that is to change low. There is many companies that used plastics in such a unnecessary ways e.g. In Ireland they have like a 6 tomatos in a kind of plastic tray + another plastic cover around it.... Most of the fruits and vegetables have the same package. They should do something about it. Indeed the things became more pleasant but honestly unnecessary.

What I think could be an option to help the ocean is by demanding all the hotels and corporations near the beach to invest in technology for a massive clean-up since they produce a lot of pollution and affect the sea directly. Similarly, we can contribute by changing our consumption habits. We should always question the effects of the products we consume on a daily basis. Sea is life, it is the origin of any kind of living thing. Therefore we have to take care of it.

Of course ocean plays vital contribution to our life. My life begins with ocean and I really feel the importance of ocean plants and animals also. Every morning I wake up from bed and take a long breath and ocean makes it possible. I live in tropical weather and ocean take the responsibility to make the weather suitable for human lives. However, the importance of ocean is unlimited but this vital issue is getting polluted day by day because of the habit and practice of us. So in world ocean day I would like to clean all the plastic from earth especially from my country Bangladesh with the collaboration of my people. And also reduce the use of things that cause pollution of ocean.

Oceans are the source of life. About 3 billion years ago, single-cell organisms had appeared in the oceans. That was the first signs of life. We can't ignore the impact of oceans in our life. In my opinion the best way to protect oceans is allocating a huge budget to scientist and the United Nations and always monitor the situation of the climate instead of celebrating the Oceans Day. Maybe it's the time to do something more effective and practical.

Hi everybody! I agree with autor, that the most urgent problem is plastic pollition, nowdays. Because the plastic waste recycling system is imperfect in my own country, hence many tons of rubbish fall into the ocean waters. I think people must be more carefull to the ocean and more kindly with it. What about celebrating, I prefer to celebrate World Ocean Day on the beach. In fact, I clean up some part of beach. In my opinion, if only another people did the same we needn't this special Day.
