Elementary Podcasts are suitable for learners with different levels of English. Here are some ways to make them easier (if you have a lower level of English) or more difficult (if you have a higher level of English). You can choose one or two of these suggestions - you don't have to do all of them!

Making it easier

  • Read all the exercises before you listen to the podcast.
  • Look up the words in the exercises that you don't know in a dictionary.
  • Play the podcast as many times as you need.
  • Play each part of the podcast separately.
  • Read the transcript after you have listened to the podcast.

Making it harder

  • Listen to the podcast before you read the exercises.
  • Only play the podcast once before answering the questions.
  • Play the whole podcast without a break.
  • Don't read the transcript.

Now, listen to the podcast and do the exercises on the following tabs.

1

Activity 1

Put the phrases in the right place, depending on whether Carolina or Emily did them.

hello everyone
I have a question
I have listen the dialog in this podcast
I stop it after 3 minutes ! It's unbearable
COULD SOMEONE tell me if it's NORMAL AND USUAL  that  "normal" people speak with such so exagerated intonations in the real life ?!!!
for me it sound totaly ridiculous and stupid
are we supposed to imitate that !
oh God ! PERSONALY I WON'T
NEVER
Am I wrong ?  what do you think ?
(I'am French-Spanish)

Hello  misterp!

You're right - the intonation is a little stronger and the speed is a little slower than normal speech. It is an elementary podcast, and most learners at that level find full speed native speech quite difficult to follow. You don't have to imitate it!

If you want something more natural and challenging, why not try some of our professional podcasts, or stories and poems? These are closer to normal native speech.

OK,  thank you
excuse me,  i was a little violent in my first post
it s not a matter of speed.  I'm afraid that people like me, and worst, I was worrying for young people (I am 50 years old personally)  will believe that they should exaggerate the intonations if they want to speak a normal English or north Americans (worst). and I don't agree with that view
although I am not an English beginner, I am not enough experimented
I began to really work seriously my English 4 months ago.
if I say stupid things don't hesitate to tell me
by the way,  is the nickname I choose sounding ridiculous for an English speaker ?
"misterp"  (mister pee ?  haha !!!)
I just think about that now.
thanks to the amazing tools we have now to learn and practice.
Thanks to "Goggle translate" for example which allows us to check, correct, and to find that word that I am searching and impossible to find in my brain ! :-)

Hello Mister P,
Thanks for your comment and your enthusiasm about learning English.
I'm sorry that you didn't like our voices on the podcasts. I think there are two issues. Firstly, different languages have different styles of intonation, so that is probably part of what you are hearing. Secondly, speaking style in a one-to-one conversation is different from speaking style in a broadcast. Presenters generally sound enthusiastic and cheerful, so their intonation is more extreme than other speakers.
Best wishes,
Adam
