Clause, phrase and sentence
The basic unit of English grammar is the clause:
[An unlucky student almost lost a 17th century violin worth almost £200,000]
[when he left it in the waiting room of a London station.]
[William Brown inherited the 1698 Stradivarius violin from his mother]
[and had just had it valued by a London dealer at £180,000.]
Clauses are made up of phrases:
[An unlucky student] + [almost lost] + [a 17th century violin worth almost £200,000]
[when] + [he] + [left] + [it] + [in the waiting room of a London station.]
[William Brown] + [inherited] + [the 1698 Stradivarius violin] + [from his mother]
[and] [had just had it valued] + [by a London dealer] + [at £180,000.]
We can join two or more clauses together to make sentences.
An unlucky student almost lost a 17th century violin worth almost £200,000 when he left it in the waiting room of a London station.
William Brown inherited the 1698 Stradivarius violin from his mother and had just had it valued by a London dealer at £180,000.

Hi I am Milton. My question is given below please send me an answer with grammertical rules.
1.Only he can do it.(make it negative sentence/use none but)
team
Hello Milton!
You would say None but he can do it. You simply replace Only with None but. However, this is rather old fashioned! I would use Only most of the time.

Sir,teach us about preposition TO,how we use it.
Hello Teacher,
I like to know about 'wish' & after, while.
How can I use the sentences with 'wish'.
for example, I wished you had a great time. can I use like this?
Which kind of verbs can I choose after+V--- and "while+be+Ving" is that right?
Thanks you,
Teacher.

Hello lovell!
Those are very big questions, but you've come to the right place! To improve your general skills, you should see this website as a library – just borrow whatever interests you! A good place to start is our Elementary Podcasts. These are short radio shows about different topics. To help your listening, vocabulary and grammar, you can listen to them, read the transcripts, and do the exercises. You can talk to other learners in the comments, too. There is lots of other material in our Listen and Watch section, some of it much more challenging. If you want to work on grammar, take a look at our grammar section.
Don't forget that we also have a search box. Put a topic you're interested in into the box – like 'meeting people' or 'the present simple' - and you'll get a list of pages about that topic.
To improve pronunciation, listen to plenty of material with your preferred accent. Also, try to record yourself. Choose some of the discussion questions and go to a site like www.vocaroo.com, record your answers, and playback your recording – what mistakes did you make? What do you like about your answer?" rel="nofollow">www.vocaroo.com, record your answers, and play back your recording – what is good about the pronunciation? What is not so good? Pay attention to the rhythm of the sentences as well as the individual words.
Hope that helps!
