hello sir.

1) i am supposed to finish up the report.
i am supposed to be finishing up the report.

2) i was supposed to leave on Tuesday.
i was supposed to be leaving on Tuesday.

what is the difference in meaning both are the same? and in which circumstances we should use ( be supposed to do) or (be supposed to be doing).

thanks advanced.

Hello ahmednagar,

This really depends on how the speaker sees the situation so without knowing the context, it's difficult to say. In general, though, using the continuous aspect in an infinitive is the same as using it in other verbal forms, i.e. it can indicate a temporary or ongoing event. It can also be used to indicate an unexpected event and sometimes there is no significant difference – again, it really depends on the context and the speaker's intentions.

Best wishes,

Hello ahmednagar,

Yes, that helps, thanks. Notice that in sentences 1, 2 and 3 there is some mention of an action in the present moment ('I'm browsing', 'I'm leaving now' and 'this very minute') – this is one of the main meanings of the continuous aspect. 2 is more confusing because of the reference to the past (Tuesday); I'd probably say 'supposed to leave' here instead, but your sentence doesn't strike me as incorrect. The continuous aspect can be used to indicate a change or development in a situation – perhaps that can help you understand this a bit better here.

All the best,

What I will do??? To fix this problem?!!!!!

Hello Ne'am,

This game is made with a technology called Flash. You should download and install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player on your phone – that should solve the problem.

Please know that we don't respond to comments immediately – we are simply too small a team with too much work for that – so please don't post your questions more than once.

All the best,
