In the first task of 'flat hunting scene 1- language focus' , why is it wrong to say the following 2 sentences marked 1 and 2 respectively
1. I can't stand geography
Answer given by British Council- I can't stand ironing
2. I couldn't stand geography
Answer given by British Council- I couldn't stand geography

Is there any rule that "couldn't stand" is followed by a noun and the phrase "can't stand" is followed by a verb

Hello Hubaib Hassan,

Your sentence 1 is correct, but if you include all the text after 'geography', it's not correct. In other words, the sentence 'I can't stand geography when I was at school!' is NOT correct. This is because the two verbs should be in the same tense, and they are not.

Your sentence 2 is identical to our answer.

The main difference between 'can't stand' and 'couldn't stand' is that the former is present and the latter is past.

thank you im very happy to communicate with you to improve my writing and English
skills

I cant distinguishe between I cant bear and I cant stand helpe me plz

Hello lubnaou,

There is no difference in meaning between the two phrases.  I would say that 'can't bear' is perhaps a little stronger, but this will depend upon the context and/or the intonation of a given example.

Best wishes,
