Listen to an interview with a recruitment expert, who talks about his experience of reading CVs and offers some good advice on writing them.

Do the Preparation task first. Then listen to the audio. Next go to each Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the transcript at any time.

Task 2

Task 3

Weak forms are syllable sounds that become unstressed in connected speech and are often then pronounced as a schwa.

In the sentence below the first 'do' is a weak form and the second is stressed.

What do you want to do this evening?

Weak forms are very common in English. Listen carefully and fill in the gaps with the missing words typed out in full.

I'm a new member. I'm so confuse because I don't know what is the way to learn English on British website. Please give me some advance. Thank you so much.

Hello Phan Tu Anh,

First of all, welcome to LearnEnglish!  I'm sure you'll have a great time here and improve your English at the same time.

LearnEnglish provides you with a huge number of materials to help you and the first thing for you to do is to explore the site.  Use the links at the top of each page to look around, explore the audio and video sections, take a look at the grammar reference section and the grammar exercises and try to find the materials best suited to your level, your needs and your interests.

Remember that there is no one way to use the site. There are many different ways of learning and different people find different ways of learning better or worse for them. For example, some people find studying alone the most productive approach, while others prefer to learn socially with other people. Some people find memorising rules or lists of words helpful, while others prefer to try to communicate with whatever language they have. Only you can say what is most effective for you. However, I can offer some general suggestions.

First of all, I would say that it is important to be in contact with the language as often and as regularly as possible. If you can, get into the habit of reading or listening to something in English every day. Set aside some time for reading, whether it is novels, short stories, articles or something else. This will help you to develop your vocabulary, to familiarise yourself with structures and to recycle what you learn rather than forgetting it.

Secondly, be clear about why you want to learn English and look for examples and models that are relevant to you. For example, if you want to learn academic English then look for examples of essays, reports and similar texts, and work through the activities here on LearnEnglish which look at that kind of English, such as the Writing for a Purpose material.

Third, try to find a partner with whom you can regularly practise speaking. This might be a friend who is also learning English, or it might be a colleague or even a family member. The more you practise, the better you will get and this is true even if you cannot find a partner and can only speak to yourself at home!

I hope those suggestions are helpful. Remember that learning is a process and sometimes we do not feel that are making as much progress as we would like. This is normal - sometimes things go better and sometimes worse - but it is important to stay motivated and to not give up. If you can do that, then you will make progress.

Best wishes and good luck,

The LearnEnglish Team

Hello Learn English Team,
I've found myself not good enough at this type of Exercise "CVs Vocabulary" , Would you please tell me how can I Work on Improving myself at this part ??

Hello Marie Magdy Maher,

I'm guessing that you're talking about the 'Preparation' task - matching the words to the definitions.  Obviously, the key is knowing the vocabulary items and so, I expect, you're already better at it because if you try the task again you'll do much better.  In fact, the first piece of advice I would give is to remember when you do a task and find it difficult - make a note, or bookmark the page URL - and go back to it after some time has passed to try it again.  Do this several times and you'll find it helps a great deal.

There are some techniques you can use if you have a task like this in an exam or a test, however.  Start by reading all the definitions before you begin matching.  Then match any that are obvious and that you are very confident about.  Finally, match the remaining ones as best as you can.  That approach should help you to do as well as possible.

I hope those suggestions are helpful.

Best wishes,

Hello Learn English Team,
I've wanted to ask you does reading of a book in English help you improve your vocabulary, and do you have some advices how to do that. I would be very thankful if you give me some! :)

I would say that reading books is an excellent way to improve your vocabulary, provided that you choose a book that (a) is at the right level of difficulty for you and (b) is interesting for you.  If books in their original form are too difficult then you might try some graded readers - there are quite a lot available to choose from.  I would say that you should definitely choose books which you will enjoy as this will help you to keep going and make the whole process much more fun.  Perhaps choose a book you have read in your own language (in translation) and read the original in English.  That way you will be familiar with the book and will find it easier to follow.
Good luck!  Let us know how you get on.
Best wishes,
