Listen to an interview with a recruitment expert, who talks about his experience of reading CVs and offers some good advice on writing them.

Do the Preparation task first. Then listen to the audio. Next go to each Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the transcript at any time.

Task 3

Weak forms are syllable sounds that become unstressed in connected speech and are often then pronounced as a schwa.

Example
In the sentence below the first 'do' is a weak form and the second is stressed.

What do you want to do this evening?

Weak forms are very common in English. Listen carefully and fill in the gaps with the missing words typed out in full.

Hello Mary,

Welcome! I'd suggest you read our Help page and especially the method described in the second paragraph of the answer to How can I improve my speaking?, which is a method that has worked very well for many of our users.

As for grammar, you could look through the Verbs section of our Grammar Reference. But if you use the method described on our Help page for improving your speaking, you'll find explanations of grammar and exercises for practising it in the resources mentioned - I'd recommend Word on the Street in particular for this.

All the best,

Hello shazia,

We're aware of the problem, but thanks for letting us know. For now, please try this link to Series 2 Episode 1:

http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/elementary-podcasts/series-02-episode-01

To get to a different episode, change the episode number above (e.g. change '01' to '09' for episode 9, to '13' for episode 13, etc.).

In the meantime, we're working to fix the problem as soon as we can!

Best wishes,
Kirk

Hello All,

I want to improve my english listening power.

Can any good english speaker assist me ?

Regards
Mobashir

Hello Mobashir,

I'd recommend you use the audio and video materials under Listen & Watch to improve your listening. Spend some time looking at the pages of the first episodes of Big City Small World, Word on the Street and the Elementary Podcasts, and then choose one to work on.

Once you've decided which one to work on, listen a couple of times and do the exercises. Then try listening with the transcript (listening and reading). Then try saying the text yourself to practise your speaking a little as well. You'll also pick up a lot of language as chunks - words which are often used together in set phrases - which will help your listening in general, as well as your speaking and writing!

Good luck!

Best wishes,
Kirk
