Which is commonly used, crossing or zebra? Can anyone teach me?

Hi Rafaela1,

I've heard mostly 'crossing', and that is also the word that I use, but 'zebra crossing' is also used in some varieties of British English -- so much so, in fact, that you can even find it in the Cambridge Dictionary. I think most anyone would understand either form, though in American English these crossings are usually called 'crosswalks'.

One thing that many people who go to the US don't know is that in many cities it is illegal to cross the street outside a 'crosswalk'. The police can even fine you for doing this, though I think that is relatively rare and I have seen many people cross the street in other places in my time there.

All the best,

Thank you for your kind explanation, I got it.
Well, it sounds weird that the police in the US can fine people who cross the street outside a "crosswalk"! If I were a policeman, I would like to be the officer in charge!!

I can see traffic lights and crossing and also a bus stop

Near my home I can see street lights because I'm living in a private urbanization in the countryside. In this place there aren't roads, traffic or crossroads. It's fantastic!

Unfortunately, I can see none of these near my house.

There are a bus stop near my house; also there is a road and a crossroad.

From my window, despite this rainy weather that make the day spooky and grim, I can see the road, which looks like a two-way alley,
There are two street-lights in front of my house. They usually are turned on around 6pm.
A lot of cables hang between my house and my neighbor's house, and some of them come across the road.

Of course, the road

I live at a dormitory area, but I also see a lot of these things. Near my house there is a crossing through that I go to a bus stop. The bus stop is near from the cross roads and the traffic on this cross roads is regulated by traffic lights. Of course, there are a few roads around my house, but they are not popular. As for street lights, there are a few of them at my yard, butI don't know anything about theis work.
