Philip Hart and Marcia Boardman discuss which candidate to appoint.

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video. Next go to Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the transcript at any time.

Task 1

Comprehension task

Put the ideas into the order they were expressed in the video.

Task 2

Business notes

In the seventh video in the series Marcia and Philip discuss and compare the two interviewees before making the decision about who to give the job to. In doing this they use a number of adjectives to describe the characters of Daniel and Sarah, such as convincing and arrogant. Adjectives can often have a positive or negative connotation – here are a few more adjectives that could be used to describe someone in an interview situation:

Positive: Convincing; Self-assured; Confident; Well-prepared; Sincere; Ambitious

Negative: Unconvincing; Arrogant; Overconfident; Unprepared; Insincere; Over-ambitious

Language level

Intermediate: B1
Upper intermediate: B2

Marcia and Philip have the same impression about the presentations of the two candidates. They seem to be convinced - and in fact, they have a point- with the well-prepared task of Sarah. Anyway, the selection is not so difficult in such an obvious case. I find their comments on the interviewees are accurate and professional.

I wonder if Daniel will consider why he could not get an offer when he receives a rejection letter.

I have no idea what exactly am I expected to do in task1. I know the proper order of the sentences but HOW can I express it? I can't "move" the sentence or any other way show the proper sequence.

Hello Bugumił,

To move a sentence, first click or press on the sentence. Then, to put it in a new position, you must click or press on the small white hand (on the right) that is in the new position. The sentence should stay there in the new position if you do this.

It's actually quite easy, though it's difficult to explain in words, so if you still have problems doing it, please ask us again and we'll be happy to help you.

OK now it works, however - one more explanation was useful - man can move the sentence only ONE step above or under. At the beginning I tried to move more steps at once. Thanks :)

So usefull. I thanks the team for their good job.

Hi I'm a new member.
I enjoy this video, and I want to know correct answers for Comprehension Task which asks reordering. I think the answers are wrong.....! They are not True/False questions.
Could you help me, admins?

Hello Rafaela,

You can see the correct answers to any of our exercises by pressing the Show Answers button. First you have to press Finish - after that, the Show Answers button becomes visible.

Hi Kirk,

Thank you for your kind reply. Sorry, I was talking about the download print version. I'd be happy if you could check the sheet when you have time!

Best regards,

Hello Rafaela1,

I see, sorry about that! I'm not sure what happened to the answers in the PDF, but I'll add that to our list of PDFs that need attention - thanks for telling us about that.

  1. Daniel Watson made a good first impression.
  2. You should always tell the truth ...
  3. Daniel Watson was too confident.
  4. Sarah Timms was persuasive.
  5. Philip Hart ...
  6. They will offer ...
