Marcia writes an email to one of the candidates giving them the news that they have not got the job.

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video. Next go to Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the transcript at any time.

Task 1

Comprehension task

Read the following statements and decide if they are true or false.

Task 2

Business notes

Telling someone that they didn’t get the job is not an easy thing to do. Philip helps Marcia to word the rejection letter in a suitable way. Here are a few things you should do in a rejection letter.

•    Address the candidate by name.
•    Thank the candidate for the time, effort and interest in the company.
•    Write a supportive sentence about the candidate's qualifications, experience or, at very least, enthusiasm or motivation.
•    Make it clear that the reason you didn't hire the candidate was because you found someone else with better qualifications and experience.
•    Offer some feedback on how they could improve their interview performance.
•    Wish the candidate good luck in his or her career development.
•    Close the letter formally with "sincerely" or "best wishes."
•    Sign your name, including your title.

Hello farahvah,

Can you tell me if the link I put in the first reply works for you?  If it does, then that will tell us what the problem is.

Best wishes,

i can not see the video

Hello farahvah,

We know that users in certain countries have problems accessing some of our content.  On some pages we have put alternative links for these users.  For example, on this page about the UK you'll see a link entitled 'Can't see the video? Click here!' - click on this to see if this lets you see the video.  If so, then you'll be able to watch videos with such links, though not all of our videos have them.

If that doesn't work then we'll need a little more information to be able to help you.  Can you let us know what you see in the video window?  Is there a message or do you see an empty space? Please also let us know what device and system you are using to access the site. Some mobile devices, such as those using iOS, are not flash-compatible and so cannot show our videos.

If you can let us know the answers to these questions then we'll try our best to find a solution for you.

Best wishes,

The LearnEnglish Team
