Before accepting the job offer Sarah meets Marcia to try to negotiate on a few areas of her contract.

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video. Next go to Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the transcript at any time.

Task 1

Comprehension Task

Watch the video. Then decide if the sentences below are true or false.

Task 2

 Business notes

In this video Sarah meets Marcia to negotiate on some of the details in her contract.

Companies are often used to people negotiating so, as long as you're realistic and polite, and can justify your requests then it's likely that you will get something out of it.

Negotiating is more than just about your salary though, you can also negotiate on, for example, monthly salary, bonuses, car allowance, pension contributions, healthcare contributions, number of days holiday or even future salary review dates.

Some companies have fixed policies about benefits, depending on the level of the position. This can make negotiation tricky, as the employer may literally have little say over the package. This was the case with Marcia who was unable to offer Sara a higher salary or more days holiday.

If this is the case, simply ask them where they could be flexible - and negotiate from there. Sarah was successful in getting added to a bonus scheme and changing her start date through her persistence.

Hello Munir,

For most people, improving listening comprehension is a matter of practice. I'd recommend you listen to a text a couple of times without the transcript, and then listen again with the transcript. When you find words or phrases you don't know, try to figure them out, and record what you learn in a notebook. Gradually, your comprehension should improve.

Our Listen & Watch section has several resources designed just for this. Please take a look there, and I'd also recommend you look at our Help page, which has advice on how to use LearnEnglish.

Thanks for this great tutorial. I want to speak English with fluency so I need a person chat with me on Skype. If anyone is agree please give me his/her Skype id so that I could chat with him/her.

Hello shabnumkhan,

Please note that our House Rules ask users to neither ask for nor give personal contact details such as Skype names, email addresses and so on. This is because we have some users who are under eighteen years of age and so must be careful with personal data.

Hi ! Just recently, I happened to use the link of British Council regarding the usage of clauses. The way they have explained is both adequate and colloquial. Furthermore, it really made me have some more information and use it ahead. And really wish to begin learning with my first comment so, please, let me just pose a question that how can I make my sentences structurally even more efficient ???
Finally, Hello to all ...

Hello Ahmed,

I'm glad to hear you found the explanation useful. I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'more efficient' in your question. To my mind, if a sentence communicates and isn't difficult to read, then it is efficient.

Hello, I'm the one who working at the foreign country and all of my tasks is related with the other country people. When I communicate with them by phone, there is some trouble. I realize this is because of my listening skill. So,how can I improve my listening skill?Kindly please advise.

Thanks & Best Regards,

Hello ma ohnmar,

Improving your listening skills is really a matter of practice. There are many materials here on LearnEnglish which you can use, and most have transcripts so you can read and listen at the same time, which is very helpful as a way of getting used to connected speech (words spoken together quickly). It's also very helpful to use the transcript in another way: you can speak while you listen, which is good both for your speaking (fluency and confidence) and your listening (understanding speech at a natural speed, recognising individual words in the stream of speech, recognising how different accents pronounce different words.

Practise and you will improve!

Best wishes,

The video appears to be working well when I check it.  Are you still having problems with it?  If so, can you let us know what operating system you are using, and if the laptop which you are using is the same one you were using a week ago when the video was working for you.  We'll do our best to help you with your problem.
