Hi,

My English level is not very good. Listening and speaking skill are pretty bad for me. So I try to listen the video without watching the transcripts until i can understand the content at least 60% only proceed to tasks, may i know is it the good way to improve my listening skill? Or do you know other efficient way than mine?

Other than that, when i speak English, i used to be translate Chinese into English which in turn I speak improper English. Pls advise how can i solve this bad habit on me?

Regards,
Douglas

Hi Douglas;
I am not good at English as well. I spent one year as a full-time English student, and I hope these tips are helpful like the way it helps me . I improve my reading skill by reading news in English everyday repeating 3 months . This helps my reading speed so much and learns by heart many words. You don't need to understand, but don't hesitate to check your dictionaries if you would like to know the content. In terms of listening, I listen to an 3-5 -minute lessons that have to include transcripts. You just listen to and write anything you heard. It is difficult to hear and may be you can not hear any word at first time, but don't give up, please. My listening skill improved significantly by this way. Nevertheless, my speaking skill is quite bad. The more practice I have, the more improvement I gain, I suppose:), I am trying to write as much as possible too.

Hello Douglas,

Listening is a difficult skill because we cannot control the speed of the language, or go back and check things as we can when reading. There is no one way to improve which is good for everyone but there are some tips we can offer and we have put these on our Frequently Asked Question page, which you can find here.

As far as translating goes, I would say that the best thing you can do is to practise speaking and reading in English. Translating takes time while speaking requires speed, so it becomes very hard to use translation when you are having a conversation. When speaking you are forced to react more quickly and this can break the translation habit. Reading is also helpful as you will assimilate many phrases which you can use without having to construct them in your head from grammar rules. You will become much more familiar with aspects like word order and this will help you to use more natural English forms.

I hope those suggestions are helpful.

Best wishes,

Hello hassan,

Yes, in fact only the first phrasing ('the impact their lives have on') is the only one that is correct.
