LearnEnglish Videos

Watch the British Council's most popular English language videos, and improve your listening, reading and understanding of general and business English – any time, anywhere.

The app has lots of great features to make learning English fun!

Key features

  • New videos are added every week, on a range of topics, so you never run out of things to watch.
  • Downloadable episodes mean you can watch offline. But don't worry, when you have done with an episode you can delete it, so it doesn't use up space on your phone.
  • Interactive audio scripts make it easy for you to repeat phrases or new vocabulary if they are hard to hear. Plus, pitch control means you can slow down the video speed if the speaker is a bit difficult to understand.
  • Three styles of player – portrait 1 (video and script), portrait 2 (script only) and landscape (video only) – make it easy for you to manage your learning experience.
  • Enjoy simple exercises for every episode, with a progress screen so that you can track your progress.
  • Share what you're watching through Facebook, Twitter and email with integrated social media sharing. Celebrate your progress with your friends.

Have you seen our Grammar Reference? There are lots of resources that could be useful to you there. Grammar is also explained in context in the Language Focus videos of our Word on the Street videos.

There is a British council here in Muscat the capital of Sultanate of Oman , but it is very , very expensive , and most of the people here say that .

Hello Nagm,

I can't really comment on that, not knowing anything about the prices and costs in Oman, but I can tell you that LearnEnglish is a British Council service and it is provided absolutely free of charge for all users.

Best wishes,

Hi, My level is intermediate as per yours online test. I communicate easily through email/chat and understand well all writing conversation in basic daily uses. But don't understand while someone speaking. How much time I need to see/listen video/audio for perfect as good listener? How much time I need to learn daily for good listener and speaker?

Hello skumar1st,

I'm afraid it's impossible for us make such a prediction - it really depends on what kind of learner you are, the way in which you study, how much you study and many other factors that we are unfamiliar with. If you work with a teacher or tutor for a time, they might be able to give you a better idea. Good luck!

Hi ahmedmamdouh,

The Great videos could be a great resource for you. I'd suggest you watch a video two or three times, even if you don't understand all of it, and then watch it again a couple of times while reading the Transcript to check your understanding. Look up words and expressions you don't know in our dictionary and try the exercises, too.

Good luck!

Hi, I've got some vocabulary questions , please help me to understand them .1:What are the main differences between the words(although, even though, despite ,in spite of) and the words(however, yet, though) I know the first four words all have one meaning but what are the differences between these four words and the second three words which I guess they also have a similar meaning. 2 : What is the meaning of this statement and what is it used for..... only food purchased here may be eaten on the premises. Thank you
Hello, 1) We have a page in our grammar section that should answer some of your questions: http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/grammar-reference/spite-despite-although Please leave another comment there if you need clarification. 2) Another way to say this sentence is 'You can only eat food here if it was purchased here'.
