Episode 05

Sarah goes for her interview. How will she do?

Do the preparation task first. Then watch the video and do the exercises. You can also read the transcript.

Marcia: Hi, Sarah. I'm Marcia Boardman. We spoke on the phone ...

Sarah: Oh yes, I remember. I was having a bad day!

Marcia: ... and, erm, this is Philip Hart, our CEO.

Philip: Hello!

Sarah: Hello, it's very nice to meet you both.

Philip: It says on your CV that you do voluntary work.

Sarah: Well, when I have time, yes! I do work at a centre for children with difficulties.

Philip: That must be very interesting.

Sarah: It's rewarding and challenging.

Marcia: Sarah, can you tell us a little bit about your current position?

Sarah: I'm assistant sales director for a chain of language schools.

Philip: So this post would be quite a change then.

Sarah: I don't think so, honestly, because the skills are the same, despite the product.

Marcia: Why are you thinking of moving on?

Sarah: Well, I've come as far as I can in my current position, I feel, and I'm 28 now and would love to take on some more responsibility.

Marcia: OK, um, let's move on to managing people. Can you give us an example of when you had to deal with a particularly difficult managee?

Sarah: Well, yes, I had two people working for me who didn't get along at all. They had no shared values, different temperaments and used to argue a lot. It looked like it was impossible for them to work together. So, I sat down with them and we talked about their differences and their problems, and after that things went much more smoothly.

Philip: How would you deal with a rapidly changing and uncertain global market?

Sarah: Oh, that's actually something I wanted to talk about in my presentation, but I'd say to stay flexible and to diversify markets and sales strategies.

Marcia: It says on your CV you speak French and Spanish.

Sarah: Yes, I do. I lived in both France and Spain for a while.

Philip: Any plans to learn other languages?

Sarah: I'd love to try!

Marcia: Erm, OK. Can you tell us about a time you had to close a particularly challenging deal?

Sarah: Well, the biggest contract I won – and the thing I'm most proud of professionally – was with a large university in India, to provide language training. The contract was full of technicalities and the client was very picky! But I still pulled it off.

Marcia: OK, erm, do you have any questions for us?

Sarah: Yes, about your ethical policy and your carbon footprint. I was wondering whether you are planning to reduce your carbon footprint and whether all your products are ethically sourced.

Philip: That's a very good question and that's something we're moving towards at the moment.

Marcia: OK, well, let's move on to the presentation.

Sarah well prepared for the interview, she replied to the interviewers' question concisely and to the points which also matched what she mentioned on the CV, which I think she has impressed the interviewers. She responsible to questions not haughty nor humble, keep suitable eye contact and smiling face.

Sara looks and behaves like a pro. She answers smartly on question s. She cares about the climate and environment which confirm that she is a responsible person.

Submitted by Fabz N on Mon, 19/10/2020 - 01:32

Sara was a good candidate. She saluted the interviewers, dressed according to the formal situation of the interwiev, and answered confidently. She know how to handle management problems using dialogue as the main tool to solve it.

Sarah did a typical interview, she was great ,i admire he and she triggered the admiration of the interviewers , i can't find any weak points of Sarah during interview , she had a proper formal uniform , suitable body language , maintain eye contact with a slight smile on her face . She prepared herself perfectly before the interview, she gave short good answer for the questions in accurate and confident way with hesitation, she remained calm and natural, and she has read about likely future company and that's indicates about her professtionlizm .

Submitted by RiccardoLippi on Fri, 01/05/2020 - 11:25

Sarah did a great interview. I can't spot any negative point in her meeting. She had right outfit, right behavior and also she remained calm and natural. She has shown curiosity doing some questions about the sustainable policies adopted by company, this has triggered the appreciation of Marcia and the CEO. At the and she has confirmed her skills, without exaggerating them.

Submitted by GERARD on Thu, 30/04/2020 - 19:22

Sarah has a very polite and respectuous behaviour but still she is smiley and remains natural. She is well dressed as she would expected to be if meeting customers. She clearly and accurately answer the questions giving the feeling of a professional and reliable person. She shows empathy and ability to listen and discuss whenever issues occured. The reason why she wants to move on is receivable for the interviewers. The only point to improve would be perhaps to find a question more open-ended in order that it does not embarrass the employer in case it can not answer.

She was good she will have this job for sure

Submitted by gerardbarrachina on Wed, 22/04/2020 - 11:51

Sarah is the perfect candidate for the job. She's very nice, knows hot to manage an interview by explaining her best practices in the past, all real. She's interested all the time in the offer, and when the intervierwers ask her if she has questions, she asks for the environment politics of the company. Opposite the other candidate, Sarah is my favourite to get the job.

Submitted by OlaIELTS on Fri, 17/04/2020 - 22:37

The good point about Sarah is that she has insights to what is required, but the bad points is that she don't know how to handle a challenging deal.

Submitted by eldabelba on Sun, 16/02/2020 - 19:05

Hello there. I had a question regarding relative pronoun Which. Is that correct to be used which or that in this sentence: I know someone that is a volunteer firefighter. or I know someone which is a volunteer firefighter. Thank you.

Hello eldabelba

In defining relative clauses like this one, we use 'who' or 'that' when we are speaking about a person and 'which' or 'that' when we are speaking about a thing.

Here of course the volunteer firefighter is a person, so 'who' or 'that' are correct and 'which' is not.

All the best

The interviewee in the video is confident and knows what she wants and what she says, her objectives are clearly described, her arguments are strong and convincing, that means she has perfectly prepared for the interview. She seems to be a promising candidate. Through this candidate 's dialogue, we can learn how to answer and express in such a situation.

Submitted by A_Ichiro on Sun, 30/06/2019 - 04:09

Sarah is a much maturer person than I thought. I thought she was careless when she did not ask Marcia to call back later in a noisy place. In the interview, she was able to attract the interviewers dressing and behaving properly, confirming her ability with examples.

Submitted by nguyennga1994 on Sun, 03/03/2019 - 16:31

Sure. Mastering English might not be the only thing that can give us a plus value in the workplace or school/college. We do need other skills, like programming, design, and etc according to the job requirement we apply. Maybe if we major in Math, it should be good if we master Math. But of course, mastering English will absolutely be a plus for a person compared to those we don’t master English.

Submitted by Tomoaki Hachiya on Sun, 04/03/2018 - 14:45

Probably she might be a good example of a candidate for a job, but I AM a perverse person, and I do think that she is too sober and square. If I were the CEO, I decline to hire her.

Submitted by Khaled v on Thu, 28/12/2017 - 19:47

I dont know which is more professional in English ( she will get the job ,she will take the job or she will have the job)

Hello Khaled,

'get', 'take' and 'have' are correct but mean different things. 'get' means she wins a competition for the job, whereas 'take' means she wins the competition and chooses the job (perhaps over other jobs). 'have' describes the job she will be doing.

All the best,

In my opinion, the organization that was held was very good, since I try to take things well and without any problem, taking into account that this interview was very formal, and will continue being until it is concluded in person. It takes into account much the presentation, the CV, among many other things.

Submitted by Moreno01 on Wed, 25/10/2017 - 16:33

It was a good video and it gave me insight about real interview and what i should avoid to succeed

Submitted by Roberto Cesar on Wed, 25/10/2017 - 16:33

I made my first (from episode 1) two mistakes with the adjectives "motivating" and "stimiluating". In my opinion the context of the sentences above is the best explanation of the difference between them.

Submitted by Sebastian Rodriguez on Wed, 25/10/2017 - 16:28

The video was very entertaining and Clara obviously got the job she was very clear in her answers and did not make the mistakes of Daniel, it was clear and concise

Could you please explain the difference between stimulating and motivating?

Hello Katia28,

Please check the meaning and example sentences for these 'stimulating' and 'motivating' in a good dictionary. If the difference is still not clear after that, you're welcome to ask us a specific question or two in which you explain what you think the difference is. We can then confirm your understanding for you. I think you'll understand the difference much better this way, and get good practice for learning this kind of thing in the future.
