So cool to read about everyone's home tradition they miss the most! I'm from England but I've been living in the States for five years and the thing I miss the most is Bonfire Night on November 5th.

The best thing about Bonfire Night is the fireworks, oh, and the bonfires! … and the history behind it. Basically, Guy Fawkes and his friends tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I. They nearly did it too – they hired a room under the House of Parliament and filled it with explosives. But someone told the royal palace. The authorities found Guy Fawkes in the room guarding the explosives, and he was sentenced to torture and death.

So it's a tradition that celebrates the fact that the king survived. It also means people don't forget what happens if you plot against your country. There's a kind of poem about it that starts 'Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot.' That's why we build a 'guy' – a life-size model of Guy Fawkes – and burn it on the bonfire. Pretty dark and horrible when you think about it!

  3. In informal writing you can sometimes miss out the beginning of a phrase:

It's nice learn about differents countries from their traditions. In Colombia we have a lot of fairs and celebrations along of the year. The Carnaval of Barranquilla is one of the biggest Colombian traditions. It happens in February or March but its organisation last almost all year because it needs to prepare several parades and concerts.

Colombia keeps its allergy in spite of its problems. This is its principal tradition because there are many carnivals, friendly people, good food and amazing views BUT, its most important tradition is that the Colombians (in majority), always bathe and are clean... Everyday!

Hi everyone It is very nice to read and learn about different cultures around the world. I am from Colombia and I think the best tradition of my country is the ´´Blancos y negros´´ carnival. We celebrate this carnival the first week of the year, but only it is celebrated in one department of the country. It is amazing because there are colorfull floats wich represent the indigenous culture, architecture and mains traditions of the region. Also, there are music, traditional dances and delicious food. But the best is how the people play with paintings and foam. This tradition was born many years ago because there was a fusion of cultures. Really it is beautiful and I am so proud about my culture.

I love celebrate the especials dates of my country because is a form the to continue the traditions for example in the city San Martin, where my father born, on November they commemorate the "Cuadrillas festival" where the people dress according the differents characters and they do games like carrers, found the money among other.

Hello everyone.It's so exciting to read about traditions of different countries! I'm from Russia. There are a lot of traditions in my country and one of them is the Day of Ivan Kupala. It is celebrated from 6 to 7 July. This holiday is ancient and we have many legends and traditions which are associated with it.People jump over bonfires,spin wreaths,dance in a circle and look for the flower of fern which on legend can help its owner to find treasures,to speak with animals and to open any locks. I really like it but I'm sad that this and a lot of other traditions have fallen into decay in recent years.

In my country we have lot of traditions, that we can divise them to national traditions and religion traditions, the first one, they have a direct relation with french colonialism in algeria from 1830 to 1962, and between yhe two dates we have sevral celebrations, every one related to a special event, as revolution, date of the independent.... the second one or the religion traditions, they have a relation with Islam as the celebration of the birth of our prophet Mohamed, the holy month in the year of muslims "Rmadhan", where adult muslims must fast during the day, and families usually gather for Iftart and have a big meal together, Aid el Fitr after the month of fasting "Ramdhan"............

It’s so cool to read about the traditions around the world. I’m form Mexico and in my country the tradition that like best is the Day of the Death. This tradition involves to remember friends and family who have died. The death is not viewed as a sadness thing because we celebrate the life’s of our loved ones. We celebrate this day with our dead. This celebration includes to visit the graves and build altars with the favorite foods of the deceased.

It's wonderful to see that the World is very diverse and colorful, and the traditions are usually moments when we share, remember and celebrate. I've noticed some common symbols in every tradition like the bonfire and the candies. Here in Brazil, we have two examples of these. The Saint John party, in which we build a bonfire and dance and sing around it, dressed like countryside people, perform an imaginary wedding, and then we jump over that fire. It happens every Winter's Solstice, at the end of June. Also, we have the Saint Cosmas and Damian party, when we eat and give lots of candies. This one happens every Spring, on September 27th. I remember once that I ate so many candies that I had a one-of-a-kind belly ache.

Familiarity with a traditions of different ethnic groups is very interesting to me. For example the common celebrate bonfire in England has similarities to our chaharchmbe suri celebrate. We celebrate on the last Wednesday of the year. ‏ by lighting a small fire,we recite a poem and jump over it. In the past on the night of the chaharchmbe suri, the tradition of spoon-waving(ghashogh-zani) was also common. This tradition similar to the celebration of Halloween in other countries. Children cover their face tonight, and they sound with bowl and spoon, and so they knocked on the door of neighbor's house. Neighbors also greeted them with nuts and chocolate. The Traditional food tonight is noodles and rice.
