A 'morning person' likes to start their day early, whereas a 'night owl' is someone who has more energy late at night.
We asked some of our friends and family, 'Are you a morning person or a night owl?' This is what they said.
I don't think I'm really a 'night owl' by nature, but I do tend to stay up late quite often. If I have a deadline for projects for my studies, I sometimes have to stay up working until two or three in the morning. And when I go out with friends, I usually go to bed really late, especially at weekends and if I know I can have a lie-in the next day!

I'm a morning person. I usually go to bed quite early and I wake up at six or six thirty. I usually have a cup of tea and chat to my teenage daughter as she has her breakfast before she leaves for school at seven thirty. Then, three days a week, I go for a run. That's the best way to wake up for me. It leaves me full of energy for the day ahead.

I'm definitely a night owl. I work in a restaurant until late in the evenings. I get home at about midnight. Obviously, I could just go straight to bed, but I don't want to! That's the time I have for myself. Even if I'm tired, I have something to eat and then I watch TV to unwind. And then, once I start enjoying myself, I don't feel tired at all. If I get into a film or computer game, I often don't go to bed until three or four in the morning.

My alarm goes off at 5 a.m. on weekdays and on the rare occasions I get up late (which for me is after eight) I feel as if I've lost half the day. For years much of my family has needed to be out the door at 7 a.m., and so they're up a little before six. I get up at five to have some time for my own morning routine in peace. Despite all this, I think I'm more of a night person by nature. Not one who stays up into the wee hours of the morning, but when I'm able to rest fully each night and follow my own schedule, I feel a little boost of creative energy in the evening.

I have no idea I am a morning person or night owl by nature. I always sleep at eleven or more even thought I go to bed early. I usually get up at six a.m although I didn’t have a good sleep last night. People said eight hours are good sleep for everyone but I think it depends on how you sleep. Did you have a deep sleep or light sleep? Did you have enough Rem? I wear a fitbit watch and it sometimes shows I slept well despite of five hours.
I am definitely a night owl. Even if I have to get up early in the morning (wich for me is before 7), I like to spend time at night alone. It is a quite moment. I feel like I am fully with myself. And in spite of not sleeping, I feel like I am restoring my soul. Then, when I sleep, I just restore my body.
So for me, the night is a very privilegiate moment...I finally fall asleep around 11pm.
I'm a night owl but I actually want to get up early. I need to wake up early next morning so I try to go to bed at 9 or 10 but I fall asleep at 12 or later. I have free time at night and I want to surf internet and watch movies to take a rest. Thus, I spend 4 or 5 hours by using social media but I don't notice time as usual. I usually lie in bed late.
being a night owl or a morning person I'm not sure somedays I find my self in the morning with no sleep at all the whole night but i have plans in the following day i try my level best not to be sleepless at night, yeah
I could say I'm a morning person. I would rather wake up early and enjoy the day than go sleep late at night. Of course it happens sometimes, but I prefer to try to mantain a good sleep routine, so I can do all the tasks during the day and rest in the afternoon and do nothing at night.
I usually go to bad around 22h-23h.

Actually, I think I´m a night owl but maybe not. I prefer to stay late at night, and I love to do that too. But I will feel very tired within staying and also in the next morning. So I don't do it very many times. If I have school, I will wake up at 5:30 a.m or a little bit later but not really late, around 5:30 a.m and 6:15 a.m. If I have a rest day like weekend, I also wake up not really late, always between 8 a.m or 9 a.m, I want to sleep more but my body doesn't want to accept that. So I have to wake up, do the morning routine and have a breakfast. I always want to fall asleep in the middle of 9 p.m or 10 p.m, but I can not do like this everyday, my schedule does not suit the time. as a result, I always go to sleep at 11 p.m or later, because I want to use the phone to have some rest for the all days. And sometimes, I can not just stop browsing the smartphone, so keep going and I realize that is too late. Yeah, that's all about myself
Unfortunately I'm a morning person jejeje... because my day begins at 7 am. I usually wake up at 7:15 and I prepare my breakfast for work. I often go to sleep at 11 or 12 pm, it all depends on how my day was and if I'm going to go the school the next day.
lol, I have both kind of habits. Sometimes I'm a night owl and Sometimes i'm a morning person.
I usually go to bed around 11 and wake up around 7AM.
But sometimes if i have to assignment in night then i go to bed around 2-3AM and wake up at 9-10 AM in the morning.
I'm absolutely a morning person. I usually go to bed around 9pm and wake up in the morning at 5:30, even on weekend. However, I tried stay up to study one night last semester. That was really a disaster. LOL
Hi ddh13,
Oh no, what happened? Did you manage to get any studying done? I only stay up all night studying if it's really, really necessary :)

Well, I would say....both, but in a sort of wrong mix. I am such a morning owl in a night person, or the other way round. I go to bed quiete early at night, reading before falling asleep....but unfortunately in the middle of the night I get awake with no reason, and no hope to fall asleep again. So I take my e-book reader and resume reading, sometimes it takes a lot before eyes and mind surrender...and anyway when alarm clock rings at 6.30 I'm like a zombie, crawling from a coffee to another, wandering where I am. So , in the end , I would say third answer for me: zombie.
I'm definitely a morning person. I love to wake up early in the morning cause I feel like I am the most productive and inspired. I start my day at 4 am and complete my usual routine, which consists of journaling, praying, exercising, meditation, getting some sun exposure by walking and then eating a good breakfast. I go to bed at around 7:30 pm, though. It's quite early honestly, but in that way, I am assured that I get enough sleep.
I'm not a morning person or a night owl. I usually go to bed before midnight and after reading some pages of a book. I'm retired, so I get up late in the morning, usually before 08:00 AM. I love to be in bed until late in the morning. LOL.
Hi marcelobj,
It sounds like a good routine! I also try to read a bit before going to sleep. It's good to calm your mind down at the end of the day, isn't it?

Hi Jonathan,
Yes, it's a routine. Reading drives my mind out of my problems and makes me sleep better. Thanks.
I am a night owl person, definitely, I can get awake until late in the evening, even doing nothing important stuff, watching TV or cleaning the kitchen. I can lie down but not get sleep easily if I have had a difficult day. I wake up in the weekday at seven o'clock and in the weekend I do not have a exactly horary to wake up if I do not have a plan for the day. I go to sleep always after eleven o'clock, if I am at a night party I can be awake for more time.
Hi and thanks for your comment! It definitely sounds as if you're a night owl. It can be great to have a lie-in at the weekend if you don't have anything particular to get up for!
Best wishes,
Jo (LearnEnglish team)
Whether you are a morning person or a night owl depends on your role. For example, if you are a primary school student, you will go to bed early and get up early. However, if you're a college student, you're probably going to bed later and wake up later. Then, if you're a serious professional, I'd guess you only get about 5 or 6 hours of sleep, and those times are between midnight and 5 am.
