Preparation

Reading text

To: Jon
From: Sue
Subject: Great presentation!

Hi Jon

I'm just writing to say well done on your presentation this morning. It was not an easy task and I'm glad it went well.

You were well prepared. The content was relevant and easy to follow. You also thought about the questions people would have. I think they were impressed! I'm sure everyone feels happier about the new system now.

If you have time, please could you listen to my presentation for next week?

See you later
Sue

Tips

  1. Write a clear subject line.
  2. It's OK to start with Hi for an informal or friendly email.
  3. Start with your reason for writing:
I'm just writing to say …
  4. Give specific feedback about things that went well:
The content was relevant and interesting …
It was easy to follow …
… you thought about the questions people would have.
  5. Say what effect their work has had:
    I think they were impressed!
I'm sure everyone feels happier about the new system now.
  6. You can finish with See you later or Speak soon.

Hi john, I am writing to congratulate you for your job last week.

We could see that you worked hard to finish your job and you found a new perspective to show the relevance about this theme.

Now it is my turn and I am looking for ideas to get right next to you in my presentation. If you have any time, could we have a chat to talk about my ideas?

Thank you so much

Hi Chloe,

I'm writing to congratulate you on your promotion to a new role.

Your performance over the last few months has been truly impressive. Not only did you win that project, but also you seduced it at the lowest possible cost, and you had a well prepared.

This is one of the biggest projects in this year, so i believe you fully deserve this promotion.

Wish you even more success in your new role, and let's celebrate soon!

Best,

Vic.

Task 1, 6. Sue would like help with her presentation next week.

I don't think this sentence have enough information to answer True or False.

In the Reading text, I see "If you have time, please could you listen to my presentation for next week?".

  • If she had said "Can you give me feedback?" or "Can you help me improve my presentation?", then the statement would be true.
  • But since she only said "Could you listen?", we don't have enough information to say she actually wants help.

Hello HVQT,

There is a degree of interpretation here but I think the implication is clear and sufficient. Sue's presentation is next week and she would like Jon to listen to it before she gives it. Clearly she wants to practise it and get some sense of how it goes. I think True is an appropriate answer here.

Thank you for your feedback! I’m truly impressed by how the LearnEnglish Team operates.

First of all, I want to clarify that my intention is simply to discuss the issue, not to argue. Let’s enjoy learning English and contribute to the community together! :)

I agree with the viewpoint that "If you have time, please could you listen to my presentation for next week?" can be seen as an indirect request from Sue to Jon for feedback on her presentation. However, after consulting with some of my friends, this indirect request could also be misunderstood as an invitation for Jon to attend Sue’s presentation next week.

If Sue's request were clearer, for example: "If you have time, could you please listen to my presentation before I present it next week?", then the answer would definitely be True. But in this case, the answer True is not entirely convincing, leading to a lack of objectivity in the test results.

Hello again HVQT,

I think if Sue simply wanted to Jon to come to the presentation she would say '...my presentation next week'. Instead she says '...my presentation for next week', which suggests she wants him to listen to it before she gives it for real. That's the reason why I think it's fairly clear that she's asking for help or feedback here.
