I have been wondering about this for a while - what is the difference between: idioms, collocations and phrasal verbs?
Hello Oana_Rt,
An idiom is an expression whose meaning is different from the literal meaning of the word(s). This could be very obvious such as it's raining cats and dogs (= it's raining heavily) or less obvious such as get to the bottom of the situation (= find out what's really going on).
A collocation is an example of two or more words which are frequently used together. For example, in English we say a strong wind but heavy rain. We don't say a heavy wind or strong rain. Why? That's just what people most frequently say. You can play with these conventions, of course, and people often do in creative writing such as poetry.
Phrasal verbs are one kind of multi-word verb. These are verbs which have several parts: the verb itself and one or more particles (adverbs or prepositions). You can read more about these here:
