Hello, dear teachers and team!

Could you please tell me if downtime is used to describe a period of time when there is now work for employees, so there temporarily don't go to work, and, consequently, don't get paid? If not, which word is suitable to describe that!

Thank you very much in advance!

Hello howtosay_,

The term downtime has a range of meanings:

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/downtime

The most common use is when a machine, device or service is temporarily turned off for repairs or upgrading: It can also be used to mean a time when someone has a short break from work and takes some time to relax.

Downtime can also describe the situation you describe, when workers are unable to work because of economic conditions or other problems:

time when a business does not operate, for example when machines break down or there is no work to do:

For plant workers who endured weeks of downtime last year, the rebound in the market is a big relief.

I am a doctor. I finished my internship in a hospital.

I worked in a medical center as a nurse in the ECG department for two years.

I stopped because it was difficult to study at the same time.

Now, I am looking for a job as a general practitioner.

I want to help people who cannot pay, and I want to work as a volunteer.

I’m a foreign language teacher by profession, but my academic background is in electronic engineering. Unemployment pushed me to change my career path, and teaching became my way to adapt and move forward.

I'm now a health and safety consultant, so some of my work is in the office, but I often go to my clients. There are many jobs that I like but I think that, if it were possible, the best thing would be to change jobs every three months, or something like that.
