Business notes

When asked to give a presentation as part of a job interview it’s a good opportunity to showcase your skills especially if giving presentations is actually part of the job. It’s also an area where you could make mistakes if you are not well prepared.

Basic Guidelines For Designing Your Presentation

List and prioritize the main goals that you want to accomplish with your presentation. For Sarah and Daniel these would be to show an interest and understanding in the work that WebWare does and in the position that is being offered i.e. sales director.

They also need to demonstrate that they have the particular skills needed for the job. In the video, Daniel has obviously set the wrong goals for his presentation where he talks mostly about himself and his achievements in a rather egotistical way. In contrast, Sarah shows that she has given some thought to WebWare’s business and how she feels she can improve it in the future.

It’s important to set the right tone for the presentation. Daniel’s presentation was more of a performance as he strode around confidently, gesticulating and even attempting to play a song on his harmonica. He was far too casual and the tone he set was not one of professionalism.

In contrast, Sarah appeared relaxed, well-prepared, serious and business-like.
Allow time for questions and answers at the end. Sarah asked the interviewers if they had any questions, whilst Daniel merely asked if he had got the job!
If you're speaking to a small group then try to accomplish eye contact with each person for a few seconds throughout your delivery. Don’t look at your materials or notes all the time.

Speak a little bit louder and a little bit slower than you normally would do with a friend. A good way to practice these guidelines is to speak along with a news anchor when you're watching television. Also try to vary the volume and rate of your speech. A monotone voice will send your audience to sleep!

The video shows a succeeded sale person and a bragger

Hi Team.
What exactly does Daniel said "All down to me" and "Blue sky thinking" mean?
Thanks.

Hello Nizam,

'be down to somebody' means 'be that person's responsibility', so by saying 'All down to me', Daniel's saying that he was the reason the sales figures were so good. 'blue sky thinking' means using one's imagination creatively.

Please note that both of these expressions are in the dictionary. I know it's sometimes difficult to find phrases, but please be sure to look. Thanks.

All the best,

hi Krik
thanks for your Clarification . sorry but Please Tell me how I can use the dictionary well .

Hello batooldirar,

If you click or press on the phrases that Nizam was asking about -- the words might be in green -- then it will take you to the definition in the Cambridge Dictionary. If that doesn't work, please try using the Cambridge Dictionary here: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/

Hello Kirk.
yes, thanks a lot for explaining. :)

Sorry my last comment was a big error. I copied the question to try to answer them. Please don't publish it.

This video is an interesting way to show mistakes we make preparing presentations.

In my opinion Sarah was professionally focused in the company's goals. She used technical words and procedures like market research, besides, she gave to Philip and Marcia advices how to improve and establish strategies in order to boost the brand and products in the clients' mind. She didn't speak about her skills, she shows her competencies to work with passion in the marketing field. Showed respect to Marcia and Philip, flexibility and transmited positive energy.

To make succesful presentations is important to be prepared about the issues, to stablish clear goals and focus in it. Try to write a guide how you are going to involve your audience . Write the most important information, graphs and pictures, after that, develop your theme using examples to get public's attention. Many people prefer to develop their presentation and in the final answer all the questions. Please don't go only to read information, is more effective and exciting to explain it.

Greetings and thank you very much for your support!

I didn't like Daniel's presentation because it was mouth full about himself rather than any research work about the post and company. He didn't mention or share any data about how he can help and improve. The presentation was too much dramatic.

On the other hand, Sarah did lot of hardwork for research about the position and she shared data how she could help. Her presentation was impressive and kept continuous eye contact. The presentation was full of data, analysis and she maintained decent manner throughout.

It's amazing, the contemporary way of learning English.
My suggestion to all is - set a realistic goal and make a lucid flow chart. Make a simple appealing presentation.

I had the problem solved by changing to a different browser.
