Daniel makes some classic mistakes in his interview.

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video. Next go to Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the transcript at any time.

Task 1

Read the statements and decide if they are true or false.

Task 2

Business Notes

Daniel makes some classic mistakes in his interview. Here are a few mistakes to avoid:

What to wear

It can be difficult to choose the right job interview clothes. Most companies will give you information about their dress code, if you phone their reception. Even if they say they have a casual dress policy, it's still a good idea to dress in slightly smarter attire to show you've made the effort. If in doubt, dress slightly smarter than you usually would for work. Daniel, dressed in jeans and an open-neck shirt, is probably too casually dressed when compared with his interviewers.

Although it's tempting, out-right lying never pays. Daniel gave some inaccurate information in his job application and is found out in the interview. By all means gloss over unflattering or unimpressive details, but telling lies is a definite no-no.

Appearing too confident

If you appear too confident and relaxed in an interview format this may come across badly and you may be seen as being arrogant. Unlike Daniel, it’s better to be modest about your achievements.

Not researching the company

Researching the company shows you're serious about the job and if you can demonstrate this in the interview then this will be looked on favourably. Have a few questions ready for the end of the interview where you can show that you have thought about the job and the company.

Hi fellows,
Anyone here would like talking by skype?
I have studied English for many years, many courses but I don´t have practised so I´m not confident when I need to speak.
I would like to keep contact by skype and improve my English.
I´m a Brazilian guy.

Hi Silvio,
It's great that you want to improve your speaking, but please remember that the house rules say that users can't post their personal details, such as Skype username, on LearnEnglish.
We have some children who use this site and it's important that we protect them.
Best wishes,

Hello Everybody,
these exercises are very useful... Thank you for your helping, I hope this site will be improve day by day...

I found it very interesting and useful as far as it generates situations to be debated. another nice thing is that we have access to the script of the whole conversation which, to be honest, was sort of difficult to unbderstan at first. after reading the transcription I also found the expresion "wasn´t pulling his weight" I can guess the meaning, but I would like to know what it actually means
I was wondering if I could download a full version.
I am looking forward to your repply.
Thanks in advance

Hi Edwin,
I'm very glad to hear that you liked the video. The expression 'wasn't pulling his weight' is used to describe someone who isn't doing the work they should do as part of a team.
As for downloading, that's a feature we want to introduce in 2011, but there are some technical and legal problems to solve first.
Hope that helps!

I really enjoyed the videos. Sarah talks like a professional in the topic. I think Philip and Marsha knew she would be the perfect candidate for the job.

I think, that Daniel lyes about his work in Networld, at least about his position in company. I can guess, that he is managee. If he had relevant experience, he woud give more detailed examples of his current work and problems he had faced. So, despite of his work in a big company he would like to have work in a  smaller company, but in higher position.  Any company wants experienced candidates in position of sakes director, so Daniel lyes, but I wonder, why he lyes about his hobby? Perhaps it's his character trait.

I enjoy watching and learning these useful episodes. Also, i want to download them to teach my students. how can I download the full version of the episode? I'm looking forward to your reply. Thanks.
