Hello Littlemoon86,
Have you tried looking this word up in the dictionary? If so, does the answer seem confusing or unclear in any way? Remember, we have a dictionary on almost every page of LearnEnglish.

Hello, I´m new to this site. I don´t know if this is the right place to post a comment, so forgive me if it isn´t:
My question is about the following phrase:
"I did not know about John´s early departure".
Could it be in some way understood as -by example- that John is dead? ("I did not know John is dead")
(besides any other more frequent meaning like leaving, even from a job).
I searched the online Dictionaries, only in one case I found that decease might be used as a synonim for departure.
I thank in advance any kind of help regarding this subject.
Greetings from Buenos Aires
Gabriela

Hello Gabriela,
The context of the sentence is important, because it is possible, in certain contexts, that someone might use the word 'departure' as a euphemism for talking about death.  However, this does seem very unlikely to me in this case.  I think the sentence almost certainly describes someone leaving earlier than expected, perhaps leaving a house, perhaps a party, perhaps a city or a country.
I hope that helps you.
Best wishes,
