IELTS interview is different from a job interview. Be sure to showcase your English ability, not your job qualification.

Are job interviews the same as IELTS interviews? The answer is, in some ways they are and in others they are not.

How are they the same?

In a job interview and an IELTS interview you are asked questions and based on your answers you are judged by another person. In both you are trying to create a good impression.

How are they different?

In a job interview you are trying to showcase your experience, your qualifications and your skills and expertise that are relevant for the job you are applying for. In contrast, in an IELTS interview you are only showcasing your level of spoken English and it is this that the examiner will judge you on.

In an IELTS interview you do not need to sell yourself in terms of your job qualifications or experience, you simply need to demonstrate to the examiner your competence in English. Unfortunately in our video clip, Joao does not understand this and concentrates on selling himself more than selling his English ability.

Hello newbotchak,

I've checked and I can hear the audio, though it's true that it's not very loud. I'll see if there's anything I can do to improve it. In the meantime, please note that you can read what Joao says by pressing Transcript, where you'll see the words he says.

Hi !
My name is Hiba and I am a TA at uiversity of Khartoum, which I did graduate from it's chemical engineering department. I am considering to take IELTS exam to get scholarship as soon as possible.
The only problem that is facing me is money, my financial situation will not support me to have any preparation courses. however this didn't stop me at all , i looked up at internet until I found this one.
Sorry for the long introduction but I intended to make it like that so I can thank you all, thanks for the great job and amazing videos , tips and transcripts.

Hi Hiba. I am from Cameroon. It is a common problem especially in our poor Countries. I am facing similar difficulties. Don't worry because your confident in your endeavour, and interacting in these kind of platforms will give more strenght to your momentum. A great deal of my knowledge in English results from personal effort. By the time you will be able to afford the IELTS exam, your chance of getting a good score will be high

Hello Hiba Abbas Ali,

That's great! Have you seen TakeIELTS? That could also be really useful for you.

Good luck on your test!

Best wishes,

both of them are interview, but in the job, grammar, fluently, accuracy and pronunciation are not important and in IELTS is pivotal.

Hi, dear my friends!
I want to thank you for your useful website. I think my weaknesses are speaking and writing, although my listening and reading are better than. When i graduated from university, i can't talk English any more. I am so shy that i can't talk anything with anyone in English. 2 months ago, I thought i need doing something, and I left my job to focus on studying English (i still have a part-time job which i just have to work once a week). Now, I'm taking a Ielts preparation course at English school in Ho chi Minh city which most of students are studious. So, I am a self-study and a student at school now. On last Sunday, i joined in the English club at school, and made friend with a girl who gave me a helpful address. She gave me the name of a group called talking with the tourist that helps student talk English with the tourist with unbelievable fee. i participated in this group on Sunday afternoon. It is amazing. I had a successful day there! I always say myself " Don't be shy, take it easy". Leave comment to develop my writing skill. Thanks for your reading.
Best wishes,

Hello ngonguyen0329,

That's great - it sounds like you've found an effective way to improve your English! At present, our Writing section includes a section on academic writing, but it sounds as if that doesn't really meet your needs. For writing with a focus on the IELTS, I'd highly recommend TakeIELTS, which has lots of information and some free practice materials. For writing in general, the ESOL Nexus has a good Writing section that might be useful for you.

Finally, I wanted to suggest you take a look at Big City Small World. Listening to the episodes, reading the transcripts, and doing the exercises might be a nice complement to the speaking practice you get with the tourists.

Good luck!

All the best,
Kirk
