Hi teacher,
I always confuse with 'raise' and 'rise'. Can you help me?
Thanks a lot

Hello khai,

The first thing I'd suggest is looking up both 'raise' and 'rise' in the dictionary (follow the links) to see the example sentences. Note that 'raise' is a transitive verb (i.e. it has an object), but 'rise' is intransitive (i.e. it doesn't have an object).

Does that help?

All the best,

I'd like to thanks to British Council for providing this material to us. It has been helping me so much. About cooking, i prefer baking everything because i know that's healthy, though i understand that fried is tasty too.

Hey everyone! First of all, thanks to the British Council for providing such valuable materials and to all the commenters for sharing these great recipes!

One of my favorite meals is beefsteak, and I'm going to share a recipe which I learned from a famous British chef Jamie Oliver. There is a whole science of choosing the right meat and preparing it, but this recipe is super simple and tastes very good. Meat itself is cooked for no longer than 10 minutes, and the whole process takes no more than 30 minutes including cleaning everything afterwards.

You need a slice of beef about one inch width and a heavy frying pan which wouldn't lose the temperature after the meat is placed on it. Season the meat extensively with salt and pepper and cover with olive oil on both sides. Don't be afraid seasoning too much, as most of it would remain on the frying pan. Let the meat rest for a little. Set your stove to the maximum temperature and wait until the frying pan gets hot (water drops should evaporate from it). You don't need oil on the frying pan as there is enough oil on the meat already. It's a good idea to open the windows at this moment :) Put the meat into the frying pan and fry for about 10 minutes for this time until the "well-done" condition, turning the meat to another side each 1-2 minutes. It will go noisy and smoky, but that's exactly what you're looking for! You may want to add a bit of thyme, rosemary, garlic, and butter closer to the end of the process. Put the meat onto a plate and let it rest for a couple of minutes. That's all! Enjoy your meal!

I love prepare boiled chicken! First, you chop 1 onion and reserve, cut the chicken in cubs, so put oil in a pan and heat. Put the chop onion and mix until it reaches a golden color, then put the chicken together mix and mix, so put salt and seasoning, cover with water and wait 20 min. read!

I will share a recipe which is very easy and also very healthy.
Ingredients for recipe are 4-5 leaves romaine lettuce, 1 carrot grated, 2 tablespoons lemon juice & olive oil and a pinch of salt.
Chop the lettuce leaves about 1 cm wide and put in a bowl then add grated carrot and other ingredients into the bowl finally mix them all. It is ready to eat. Meal is called green salad.
It can be added some fixing according to individuals’ preference such as some canned tuna and black pepper or Turkish white cheese and ground walnut and so on.
Enjoy you meal!

OK I'll tell you about a dish made in Romania. This kind of food it might be found in other country. But now I will tell you about our recipe. This dish is typically Romanian. You need five hundreds grams of meat, it can be, meat from pork and from a cow,two hundreds grams of rice, some salt, pepper, and six hundred grams tomato, and finally one kilo of capsicum. Firstly chop de meat in a small pieces then mixture the rice and tomatoes with meat then adding salt and pepper.
Secondly we fill the peppers with all this composition. Finally we puts the filled peppers into a pot. This pot has to have water mixture with tomato. Then we jus have to wait about one hour , one hour and half. When all is done, I mean good boiled. We can served this dish with yogurt. Poftă bună!

Let me tell you how french chips have to be done.
First, Belgians thinks this recipe is their's... Second, in France when we speak about "chips", they aren't the "french chips" you know in England... But potatoes sliced very thin and fried, like those you find at supermarket in aluminium bags.
You take big potatoes, preferentially "Bintjes". You peel them, wash on clear and cold water. You slice the potatoes in long and squared pieces named "frites". The slides could measure one centimeter, named "Pommes pont-neuf", or less. For example, half a centimeter, the chips will be named "Pommes allumettes" and very thin, "Pommes pailles".
Don't wash again and deep fried in oil at 140°-150° C for 5 to 8 minutes. Time depend on the potatoes and their size : they don't be colored, just cooked inside like "puree" it's the same word in french for mash potatoes. Typically in north of France or Belgium they use beef grease, named "Blanc de beuf". Please note they are Celsius degrees...
Then heat the grease to 180~190° C and fry again your chips until they are crisp, golden beautiful and tasty french chips.
