Hi,
Why do we say "Try to put" and "Avoid interrupting". Why is gerund being used for the second question and infinitive for the first one?
Thank you!

Hi danaman,

The verbs determine which form is required.

Some verbs are always followed by an infinitive (e.g. 'want') while others are always followed by an -ing form (e.g. 'avoid'). Some verbs can be followed by either, with a change in meaning (e.g. 'try').

Hello
I am not very clear about one sentence that I hope someone could help me with that :
"But the idea that most of us are moving from one temporary job to another is not borne out by the figures"
the above sentence means that the figures does not support the claim. right ?

Hi,
Hope u did the IELTS very well and get the expected results In each Band,
I gonna have my exam coming sep, so if we could share our knowledge, recourse and... , specially on writing and checking some sentences that I am not sure whether it is correct or not. bu the way this is my teleg ID -----------------, hop to hear from you.

Hello hmd,

It's great that you want to share resources and practise with another learner, but I'm afraid our House Rules don't permit you to share personal information such as you Telegram ID here. You two are welcome to write to each other here in the comments. I'd also suggest you check our Facebook page, where you'll probably find some good ideas and where it's a bit easier to interact with others.

Good luck!

All the best,

Hello mirahush,

Yes, that's right -- the statistics do not suggest that we are moving from one temporary job to another. There are a couple of other examples in the dictionary entry for 'bear out'.

Hello,
1) People feel less secure at work than in the past.
2) This doesn't mean that people necessarily feel more secure, through.
I would like to know if these above two sentences have the same meaning.
In second sentence, I thought people might feel normal rather than less secure same way as first one.
Thank you
Pearl

Hello Pearl,

They more or less mean the same thing. 2 comes in the context of statistics which show that the same percentage of people nowadays have permanent contracts as people did in the past. This suggests that they have more secure positions, but sentence 2 suggests that, despite this, people don't feel more secure. It gives a little more information than 1.

All the best,

Hi everybody from Spain,

In my opion the old working patterns not persist at least in Spain where you have to work a lot of hours and the salary is very bad, I think that over 25 years ago the people work a lot too but the salary was better than now, also nowadays the people are more prepare than before with more studies, languages...but the problem is that the companies doesn't recognize them this big effort so I hope the things change in the future as soon as possible.

Thanks for the podcast

It is extremely useful topic in our work life. Finding out the main features in processes or facts is essential for each position in the companies. There are lots of vocabulary in the audio script which helps to deal with figures. Concerning the interview topic, unfortunetely, it is true that people around the world work compared to the past. It is really difficult to find work-life balance nowadays...
