The pound sterling is the oldest currency in the world that is still in use. What do you know about the money used in the UK?

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video or listen to the audio. Next go to Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the Transcript at any time.

Task 2

Read the sentences and fill in the gaps by dragging the words from the top.

Great video and very useful information. It would be great if you could create a track or a video telling why is it that the UK decided not to use the Euro, and what possible consequences would have arisen if it hadn’t been so. Thanks again

That's an interesting idea. I think the only problem with it is that the topic is quite complicated and political. It would be hard to make a balanced video that was easy for learners to understand. I will think about it, though.

The LearnEnglish Team

 nice to know your culture

Thanks for your instructive website! I'm really glad that I can improve my English with such an interesting virtual place!

Why do you omit the audio file of it? And why don't you consider the internet speed in some counties is so slow that we can't use the video? why don't you make the video downloadable? you always have some silly excuses about that. I'm very disappointed with you.

Hi Mohammad,
I'm sorry to hear you are upset with the service we provide on the website.
Although you might think our reasons are 'silly', it's very important for us to stay legal. If we made some of our videos downloadable we would be breaking the law in connection to copyright.
We know that people in different countries have different speeds of internet access. Some people can watch everything, others can only read text. Some people can only download video, others can't even do that. We try to make LearnEnglish materials available to all of these different types of people, but there will always be situations where some have better access than others.
We do plan to make more videos available for download and provide audio files with videos. However, we're a small team and there are many areas of the site that need work. For example, at the moment we are working hard to produce five 'Word on the Street' pages every week.
We appreciate your feedback and hope that you will understand why it's not yet possible to make some files downloadable.
Best wishes,
The LearnEnglish Team
