Philip, CEO of IT company WebWare, can't believe what sales director Brian is telling him!

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video. Next go to Task and do the activity. If you need help, you can read the transcript at any time.

Task 1

Choose the correct answers to the questions.

Task 2

Business notes

In this episode WebWare’s CEO Philip Hart sacks his Sales Director for underperforming. Philip uses 2 expressions to do this. The first is I’m going to have to let you go which is quite a gentle way of expressing the fact. The second is You’re fired, which is a little more direct.

There are even more ways to express this in English. Dismiss and discharge are both quite formal:

He was dismissed for turning up late on a regular basis.

The director was discharged of his duties.

Other less formal, but more colourful ways of saying the same thing are:

give someone the axe

give someone their cards

give someone the boot

Hi Alina,
We want to make the videos downloadable, but there are some problems to solve first. Hopefully in 2011!

Hi. I am Annie from China. Thank you very much for affording us such a good website to learn English. It is great. I just like to know how often will the episode be updated? Will there be something new for everyday learning? Thank you.

Hi AnnieJ

It's great that you like the site. There is almost something new everyday but not in every section. At the moment, there are new stories and poems every week. There are also podcasts every month, Big city small world once a fortnight, and regular videos. The you're hired videos are updated monthly at the moment but every week there are new videos across the site.

We've also got lots of new content in the pipeline so keep an eye on the site as there will be exciting new learning activities in the future.

Hi Mustafa,
It's great that you find LearnEnglish useful. We really want it to be a site that helps people with their English.
Your example with 'let me go' used it perfectly! The only little problem is that you used a conditional which would be better with 'will'. So, if I don't work hard my boss will have to let me go.
Thanks for your comment!

very interesting helpfull exercises ... i hope, i'll be able to speak English very well soon.

Yes, Philip has done right, let Brian go and engages a new capable sales director is a correct step. But talented person is not easy to find, moreover the requirements of Philip are so high: possess master's degree, strong interpersonal skills, have to be a team player with vision, good at Spanish or Mandarin apart from English. Alas! Let's see how Marcia does her job. Thank you.
