Can you believe it? Someone in another group asked me to write some pages of their website in English and French. But they can't pay because 'I'm starting this business with no money.' He said he's a professional photographer and he can do some photos for me instead. Am I wrong to be angry?

Asher87

Nope! I’d be angry too

JayCee99

I can't help but here's the link to a friend's website. He is a French–English writer and translator www.franco-anglo-translations.com/About

Carla62

Er … asking people to work for free … not cool!

Asher87

^^^ This!

JayCee99

Oops! I thought you were looking for someone. Sorry for the misunderstanding smiley

Carla62

I can't pay my rent with photographs, sorry

Katie20

Exactly!

Mylo45

True, but professional photos cost a lot of money, especially if you're getting married. Sorry I don't speak French or I would do it cheeky

Katie20

Here's a link to his photography if anyone wants the job www.billsphoto.com/portfolio As you can see the website needs some work … wink

Carla62

@Mylo45 Maybe, but people always ask writers to work for free #PayMe

Katie20

Yep, if I need photos OK but I prefer to get paid with money

Tips

1. Writing in online forums is more like speaking.

2. You don’t have to put full stops (.) at the end of sentences.

3. Use ^^^ to show you’re talking about the post above yours.

4. Use @ and a person’s name to show clearly who you’re replying to.

5. You can use emojis.  cool

6. Stay calm and be polite. Some people get angry in online discussions but try to avoid that.

No, I don't join in discussion forum. I don't like to join these. I never make any comment in social media.

Hello everybody!
Recently worked with a team that helps start software development. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. If you need it, you can apply.

Hello ecoclicky,

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the term 'bio-based', but it sounds to me as if it emphasises the source of the materials it's made from, whereas 'biodegradable' seems to speak more about what the item will become in the future.

When ı think about a discussion forum ı never wrote a forum ı don't know why however maybe ı like to speak that's why ı didn't write at online forum. But if the assumed the WhatsApp groups is a discussion forum then ı am frequently writing message

I dont join the discussion in the social media, because I think It's unnecessary, and waste of time. Because on the social media have a lot of bad content, dirty content, and not really useful. If I am interest in any subject I often find out forums or groups that talk about it. The subjects that interested me often help my life or jobs . Recenty, I'm interest in the graphic design, I want to learn about it, and can find small income from it beside daily main job.
Does anyone here know the graphic design?

Do you join in many discussion forums? Why or why not?
I prefer to stay far away from discussion forums especially in social media, because if they not agree with you they write forward you bad things.

Hello,

Can someone clarify which is correct with a logical explanation.

This is wrt to Bar Graph Description (IELTS Exam)

1) The number of students who like or likes to ......
2) The highest number of students who like or likes to ....
3) An equal number of students who like or likes to ...
4) A number of students who like to ...

Thanks.

Hello chandanak82,

In all four of these sentences, the antecedent of the relative pronoun is a group of students. Although each group is grammatically singular, the idea in each case is of more than one person, so the plural form of the verb ('like') is the correct form here.

There are some cases where one can choose between using a singular of plural verb (e.g. in British English, we often say 'The team are training hard', but in American English 'The team is training hard' is more common), but when speaking about 'a/the number of ...' it's plural.

By the way, our Describing a bar chart Writing skills page (https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/skills/writing/intermediate-b1/…) might be of interest to you. There are other pages about speaking about charts in our Writing skills section as well.

No, I have not join in any online forum because we have not much time to think about other people. Instead I like to go to temple for feed the hunger people. And do financial help to poor people.

i am not often join in many discussion forums because i do not have many time for that

I don't join many discussion forums because people are unkind, rude and show low level of research about the topic they are discussing.
I am not interested in discussions in online foruns. When that happens, I tend to be polite and express my ideas politely.
Err.. Sometime. I think It is actually for me now, when I learning English. I can practice my spelling for free) What do you think about it?
I have a question, please. In task 1, I don't understand why you use 'they' instead of 'he' or 'she'? For example, it said: "What does Katie20 mean when they say 'Exactly'?" Why you don't write "What does Katie20 mean when she says 'Exactly'?"?

Hi Leila77,

Good question! We can use they when we don't know the person's gender. For example:

  • Somebody called me while I was in the meeting. They didn't leave a message.

In modern English usage, some people also use they when the person's gender is known, to avoid invoking any gender stereotypes.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

I think it is the way it works with other languages. We have to learn them in their own way rather than translate them into our language and then learn. It makes the process complicated.

Sure, it helps me to improve my English language if it is in English by speaking with native, also it expands my culture by reading a lot about different subjects
Well, it's really useful for everybody when we write the comment on Facebook or Instagram. It's necessary to write politely words.
Yes, I join in many discussion forum because I can learn their opinion and I can know what they think the problem. If I am lucky, I can get help from them. So, I like discussion forum.
I like to join forums and make communication with people because it helps me to learn more and make some new friends. it is important to br polite nad respect other's ideas and opinion.
oh I used to take part in the forum like this, but the shape is pretty different, it is more likely to group chat. It's very good if people keep polite while chatting.
I am used to participating in online discussion forum, from others opinion I can learn their viewpoint and express my standpoint. Besides it is a good opportunity for me to improve my writing skill and change my thought about some stuff. Our living circumstance is changing everyday, we need to open our mind to learn more from other people, other culture, even their advanced technology
i sometimes participate in the forums in the issue like education self development business and some interesting issues i presenting my thoughts politely also i believe the main value of this conversation to know the opinions of others not for wine in the discussion i found some people attack anyone have different thoughts also speak impolitely i try to avoid those guys and end the discussion with them
I only join in the discussion forums that I'm really interested in the post's topics like topical issues about national politics, education, economics, health, traffic, or lifestyle. I like to read positive, polite, funny comments of forum participants. Sometimes, If I disagreed with somebody's comment, I would have polite feedback to express my opinions.
I rarely participate in the discussion forums because people are generally very intolerant and I don't like it. All owners of the truth
Telling the truth I join many discussion forums. Why? Because I like to discuss something with other people. Like to share my opinion and read about what other people think (not all, of course, but well ...)) I'm taking part in our most popular Formula-1 community, write posts, comments, jokes, or memes. I also a member of a few football fan groups on Facebook. I'm ashamed to say it but as my favorite club is playing awful recently I can't stay calm and polite in my comments ... sorry )) I'm also a bookworm, if you know what I mean. So I often read and write about books in some thematic Facebook groups. And I love it
I have participated in many discussion forums. For example, in high school and university classes, I talked with my classmates and sometimes professors. This is something that happens on a daily basis, but the unusual and impressive conversation is a group discussion held during high school and university entrance exams. It's not an interview. This was an exam to see how much cooperation and leadership I had .I think that the group discussion is also a place where I can present my thoughts and listen to other people's opinions, incorporate them and broaden my horizons. I think it would be better to gather opinions from various people. I think this will be necessary not only within the university but also in the future for group discussions. Coronavirus has now led to online classes and avoided face-to-face classes. In online classes, I could talk through video calls, but I thought I could talk more about what I wanted to talk about if I met him in person. So, I want to come to a conclusion and have a group discussion in person.
Yes. I have participated in discussion forums several times in the past. The reason why I have participated is that I had the opportunity to hold such group discussions in university classes. For example, We can think of a new pizza product as a group, or we can think about English question as a group in an English class. However, recently, the number of opportunities to participate in such discussion forums has decreased. The reason why this is that around March of this year, the coronavirus became prevalent in the world, and we have become an online lesson at home instead of going to school to prevent infections. Since online lessons are not face to face lessons, it is very difficult to hold discussion forums, and it is only possible to take lessons. However, recently,I had a chance to participate in the discussion forum. As one of the activities of a student support group, my friends introduced that university students all over Japan have the opportunity to zoom in and discuss life at school and various issues in Japan today. It seems that it will be held next time, so I would definitely like to participate.
Yes, I recently had some opportunities to participate in online discussion forums. I have never participated in an online discussion forum until now, but this year I am using an online discussion forum in my lessons because it became an online lesson due to the spread of the coronavirus. When I tried using this, I found it very convenient to be able to comment freely at my own timing. However, what can be done at one's own timing makes it difficult for some people to participate in the comment, so the development of the discussion is difficult. In addition, it is difficult to develop the discussion because it is a conversation with characters. I often participate in online discussion forums because the good points of text conversations are comments, so I think that it is suitable for discussions with a large number of people because I do not miss the conversation. Also, in the case of text conversation, translating is easier than conversation, so I think that it is suitable not only for people in the same country but also for people in other countries. I thought that it would be good if more schools and companies increased the use of online discussion forums.
Yes I do. Recently, I have an opportunity that join online discussion forums. There are two reasons. First, we have to take classes at home due to the spread of corona virus, so I often use online discussion forums in the class. Second, we are now living in the internet society with the development of social media. As a result, online discussion forums are becoming on a regular basis of us. I think that online discussion forums are very convenient and easy means that I discuss in the class or not. Therefore, I often join online discussion forums.
I think joining Discussion forums is very very interesting. Beside it's a great opportunity you can practice your writing and speak up what you want to say. It's also a place you can listen to varying opinions from everyone, not just in your culture but all the places in the world. I'm a Reddit fan, and I find there are so many fascinating things. Not just for entertainment but also seeing other country's problems such as #blacklivesmatter, or women harassment problem in Egypt, etc. Our generation is becoming more and more globalization. I think we should somewhat understand other countries' cultures and always keep an open mind.
Discussion Fourms could be beneficial for the person who has a job require him to convince other people, for instance sales representatives it could be a nice training for him nevertheless personally I prefer to conduct decisions face to face it would give me the opportunity to read other people's expressions and body language. Sometimes body language tells you how much people believe in what are they saying.
Joining forums is really interesting for me. It looks like a real life situtation .v It makes us think, speak and exercises our brain and
