Dear LearnEnglishTeam,

I've noticed different use of the words ON TO and ONTO. In the first sentence"move on to managing people" the words are divided ,and in the second sentence "...then move onto something bigger", it is one word. Could you explain me the difference between "on to" and "onto"? Thank you in advance. Kind regards,Dacja

Hello Dacja,

In British English traditionally the difference was as follows:

We use 'onto' where we are describing movement:

Let's climb onto the roof of the car - we'll see better from there.

I pushed the bike onto the pavement.

I stepped onto the bridge.

We use 'on to' where 'on' is part of the verb and/or is describing progress rather than movement:

Let's move on to the next item on the agenda.

After finishing school you can move on to further studies at university or college.

Open the web page and log on to your account.

However, this is changing. I believe in US English 'onto' is gradually becoming the standard form (though I am not from the US myself, so I am not 100% sure of this).

I hope that helps to clarify it for you.

Best wishes,

Thank you Peter. It is always useful to learn new things.

Sir I am not able to see the video. Can u please help me?

Hello mksh,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems accessing the videos. Can you give us some more information so that we can try to identify the cause of the problem?

  • What device are you are using? In paricular, are you using a mobile device?
  • Can you watch the video on another device, such as a different laptop or desktop computer?
  • Are you able to see videos on other LearnEnglish pages, such as this one (try both the normal video and the 'Can't see the video?' link)?
  • Are you able to watch videos on other websites, or do you also have problems with those videos?

Your answers will help us to identify the cause of the problem and to see if there is anything that we can do to help.

Best wishes,

The LearnEnglish Team

I have been in some job interviews on both sides, but as an interviewer I have found some guys like Daniel, arrogants and with nothing of modest during the interview. This video shows what not to do during a job interview, it's very helpfull!!!

Interesting video. I hope one day I can speak fluent English. Speaking and writing are my weakness.

i think this video very useful for worker like me. Not merely for gain knowledge about interview but also for learning process. Before this, i never noticed about classic mistakes. When i saw this video, i become more realized about the way we answer a question and body language. Thanks a lot British Council. I will learn from your website until i master in English.

Dear Learn English Team.

I have a wonder about Articles : I don't understand why Marcia said " Let's move on to managing people" but in next sentences " Let's move on to the presentation"...
Both of them are noun: managing and presentation.

Thanks a lot
