Presenter: Welcome to today's show. We're very happy to have Anna Oliveira as our guest today. Anna is the creator and founder of HomeworX – spelled with an 'x' we should note – an app which helps teenagers with their homework. Thanks for coming in, Anna.

Anna: Thanks for having me.

Presenter: So, tell us about your app. How does it work?

Anna: Well, teenagers and their parents have numerous challenges when it comes to homework these days. In many families both parents work and don't have much available time to help their kids with their homework. And even if they do have time to help, they may not be able to offer support with the content. What I mean is, they may not know, or at least remember, enough in any given subject to support.

Presenter: You mean they might not be able to remember complex maths or might have never studied certain subjects, such as biology or economics, themselves?

Anna: Exactly. So they might want to support their children with their homework, but have neither the time nor the knowledge to do so.

Presenter: I see. So the app helps solve this problem?

Anna: Yes, and more. The next issue is that tutors can be expensive, and there may be long waiting lists for specialist tutors in the town or region you live in. Our HomeworX app brings students and tutors together online. Students can search a database of pre-approved tutors and sign up for live online support. They don't need to be in the same town or city.

Presenter: That sounds really great.

Anna: It is. And this approach also enables us to offer the tutoring services at lower prices because there's no travelling time involved for the tutor to get to the student's home. And tutors who live in remote areas are happy to get access to more students, and be able to work from home, even at lower rates.

Presenter: This all sounds great. So, how did you come up with the idea?

Anna: Well, as you might guess, I was one of those parents I described earlier. I really wanted to help my son with his homework, but I was either too busy with work or I didn't actually know anything about the subjects he was having difficulty with. Also, we live in an area where there aren't many tutors and the ones that are there are either very expensive or have long waiting lists.

Presenter: Yes. I can understand your predicament. Well, it sounds like a very useful app that is clearly meeting a need. And its popularity obviously speaks for itself.

Anna: Thank you.

Presenter: So, do you have plans for the future?

Anna: We've just secured some funding and hope to expand the range of services we offer using the app.

Presenter: We wish you the best of luck. Thanks again for coming in. That was Anna Oliveira, founder of the tutoring app HomeworX (with an 'x', don't forget!), which is available for both Apple and Android devices. Join us again next week for another business interview. Have a great week, everyone.

Language level

I have many favourite apps for learning english on mind, for intance Cake is a great app where you can learn and practice your pronunciation and English course offers pretty good explaination about grammar. But in my personal opinion, if you want to learn english you need to be in a learning mood, that means to be focus so it is better to study in the computer not in the phone. And this web is the best for that !!!
My favourite learning app is British Council, as it offers variety of fun filled activities to help learning English better. It also assess the level of the learner and suggest the activities accordingly. One can find activities, audios, videos, quizzes, forums etc. covering all the important aspects of English- reading, writing, listening and speaking. To conclude, it's a complete English learning package.
Excuse my user name, I'm William. My favorite app for learning languages is "Lingo Deer". It is far superior compared to "Duolingo", although it is not as popular. Lingo Deer offers a vast amount of information via its user-friendly interface. It presents a humongous database of knowledge, from a broad range of languages such as German, English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Italian, and many more. Unfortunately, you need to purchase the application; however, there's always the option of illegal downloading/pirating (I do not support this, but neither do I condemn it).
Well, this was an interesting assignment, brought to us by our teacher, Mr Eduardo Campos. Thank you teacher.
1...started the company and manages it now. 2...is for students who want to find a tutor. 3...don't have the time or knowledge to help with their children's homework. 4...offers live online support from tutors. 5...often charge lower rates. 6...is already popular. 1....a problem 2... and idea 3...a need 4...itself 5...funding 6...the range of services Duoling because it is very easy to understand the language with all the exercises
Kahoot is my favorite app for learning because is a great way to keep students engaged, it focuses on social learning and makes it fun. Also is easy and quick to use, you can use it from any device and it's free. The students can create their own quizzes too, so they can learn and have fun at the same time. Students are encouraged to be leaders by researching, creating and presenting quizzes. Kahoot saves the result of every quiz played over the platform., it's like a competition which also makes the app fun.
I use different apps for learning. Some of them are Duolingo, Youtube and Skillshare. You can access to different courses online. I feel is very convenient using online apps to clear doubts about homework. I would like to know if there are other great apps as well.
Recently, Im studying Chinese language in an app called Super Chinese. This app is very efficient and very complete and understandable!
My favorite learning app is Duolingo because it helps me learn new languages. I have learn with it several languages like, french, and italian. I like the fact that it is free, unless you want to get exclusive things. The only thing I dislike are the ads after each lesson. But in general, I loves this app and will recommend it fully.
What´s your favorite app for leaning and why? My favorite app is British Council cause it have like a broad more variety than other apps as it have tutoring and practices including business learnings, while the other apps have only practices and games. However, I would like if this app could have some sort of like a definition system that you can look for words you don´t know.
I don’t really have a favorite app for learning, but I love using kahoot. Because is a learning platform where we can create questionary for learning or improving our knowledge in the that subject. Where the student are participant.
My favorite app for learning is Elevate. Elevate is an app that helps me expand my vocabulary, my grammar skills, my reading comprehension, and my mental math by giving me daily activities, in the format of games, to train daily my english and brain. I really enjoy this app because it´s not only teaching me but the games and points make me very competitive and encourage me to improve myself.
My favourite app to learn any other language is Duolingo although I don't necessarily use it to learn english. I'm actually using it to learn Italian since we are in quarantine. It's actually very easy to use it while others are kind of hard. The app its very dynamic which helps you learn. I really like the app I would definitely recommend it unless you want to stick to other one.
well...I don't really use an app..but I communicate with others, see videos, and learn by myself...
What's my favourite app for learning and why? Hello, My favourite app for learning is duolingo, it is a very complete app that contains the required information to learn a new language. One of the things I like the most about the app is that it gives you as many practices as possible to be able to understand everything correctly. Besides it's an app that I highly recommend.
Hi, my favorite app for learning is google classroom. It is a nice app for the interaction student-student, student- teacher and teacher-student. Teachers are able to post assignments, homeworks and reinforcing material with the extra of having a personal space for the turn in of the assignments.
What's your favourite app for learning and why? As for learning app options, there's a huge variety. Apps which go from podcasts and audio books, to videos, to reading based apps. As a favorite option i would pick the Khan Academy App. Free courses of a variety of topics. Mostly used for mathematics based topics.
Hi, my favorite app for learning is google classroom. It is a nice app for the interaction student-student, student- teacher and teacher-student. Teachers are able to post assignemnts, homeworks and reinforcing material with the extra of having a personal space for the turn in of the assignmients.
My favorite app for learning is Youtube. Because is an app where you can find any methods of learning, since audiobooks to very detailed diagrams. In Youtube there are many channels that create content of people explaining a topic or a problem with all its procedure. Also its vert easy to access and to use.
Although learning may seem complicated through an app, I believe my favorite, for educational purposes, is Quizlet. Here, I’ve found flashcards that have helped me study for all the subjects. Not only have I been able to shed light on topics I didn’t understand, but also, I’ve practiced for exams. It has helped me with memorizing, understanding and homework itself. Quizlet has given me access to thousands of study plans so that I could have everything I need to know before a test.
My favorite app for learning languages is Duolingo. It is very easy to use, it motivates you to continue. It also has every type of exercises from listening and writing up to speaking and translating. It is actually very effective and you can spend just 5 minutes if you don´t have time, or maybe a whole day if you want. You can also learn several languages at the time and still learn correctly the languages.
Hi dear all, with respect to the question, my favorite app for learning (Languages) is maybe Duolingo, but, sometimes it is stressful since you can't interact with other people by the cellphone (I mean, I know that exist the app in the computer, but, it is easier to use the phone instead PC) In the case to learn other subjects such biology, maths among other, I don't have an app, since when I learnt these subjects I didn't have access to internet and for this reason my way for learning was only by reading books and by personal classes. Greetings to all!
Well. I already used one APP to communicate me with other people. When I need more information about some subject, I search on internet or Youtube.
There are many apps I ussually use to learn english. Cram and Zamarican English are the most favorite apps for me. Cram is the best way to study new words. You can write the words and review them by Flash Card Tichnic. Z amarican is good to study Grammer and improve communication skills.
To practice my speaking skills I like to use Cambly. There I have aces to many English tutors who are online to start a conversation. I use it three times a week. To practice my reading and listening skills I like to use Learn English or TED ED. And finally, to practice my writing skills I like to give comments after all my exercises here at Learn English, besides writing emails for my job.
Hi, I think this app useful now at this time ,after Covid19 ,in my country we were studying online and as i am work online i cant have time to teach my son so i need someone to help me .
I prefer using an app called The Way, which is very similar to the app homeworkx that is mentioned in the podcast. It offers tutors for all kind of subjects in a very convenient price, and also if you sign up it gives you a free month to try it so i really recommend it .
There are a lot of people who really need help to learn education especially in the remote and urban areas. It is really good to support them this kind of app which might be benifited very much in a productive way.
What's your favourite app for learning and why? Hello, I really don't have a favourite app for learning... hehehe... but I use youtube to watch some videos to learn more English. I would like to know more about apps if it's possible to you tell me, English tutors here.
I don't use app apps at the moment. I used to entraining my languages skills with Duolingo, but I didn't like it very much, it was too "false" for me. The sentences didn't have so much sense and I had bored of using it.
My favourite app for learning is 'Opera'. The popularity and its efficiency obviously enhances optimum service.
For me, EDX offer a different kind of courses in english. EDX is associate with the better universities in the world, and you can enter to their courses for free.
Right now, my favorite app is Learning English, because you can learn english from basic to advanced level, and best of all, you don't have to pay for it. On the other hand, in this application you learn to use this languaje with everyday expressions.
I usually use the e learning website and futurelearn courses to improve my English. Since I heard so much about BBC English I will give it a try.
How can I know that I passed the listening skill? And how can I know that I finished my course?

Hello Nourhansss,

The material on LearnEnglish is not a course which you can pass or fail. We make the material available for people to use in order to improve their English, but there are no tests or ways to pass or fail.

Thank u Okay.. Now how can I begin my course I did skills And grammar and all of that stuff What should I do next? And I downloaded the apps I don't understand what to do I am sorry

Hello Nourhansss

As Peter said, this part of LearnEnglish is not a course. It's more like a library, where you can use what you'd like to. We do have a series of courses for subscribers if you would like to do a course.

But there are also plenty of other free materials here, particularly in General English. You can find hours of audio and video and quite a few things to read there, so I'd encourage you to explore it a little before choosing something.

All the best

Kirk

My favourite app for learning English is BBC news and British Council Website. I like to read World News and I like to study with you, the tutors from British Council. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn English. Thank you
Dear Kirk My favourite apps to English learning are those your web site has introduced in link https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/apps.
Hello, my favorite App is Edx it has a lot of free courses to practice among this obvious English.
The lady in studio has atypical pronunciation and accent. She has read film review also. Her pronunciation is neither American nor Spanish for sure. I have never heard someone who speaks like this. It sounds strange but interesting also. I wonder where does "Anna" come from? What part of United Kingdom does she come from?

Hello Johnny,

Anna's accent is a fairly typical educated southern English accent. It's not very strong and doesn't have any very distinctive regional elements. You can hear people speak like this across the south of England in the Home Counties region - the various counties surrounding London - and beyond.
