I have one question about "Carlos said that I couldn’t help overhearing your conversation...".  I don't  understand how come used " help " . thanks

Hello, Emmalee!
Thank you for asking this  question! Today, when I was reading this lesson I didn't  notice the idiom! You've helped me with my learning!
Thanks again!
Ceca :)

Dear Emmalee
"Can't + help" is an idiom which means "be unable to do otherwise". In this situation, Carlos wanted to say he didn't mean to hear the conversation, he just got it maybe because the guys speaked so loud.
These phrases, can't help, is always followed by a present participle.

Hello, imymemine!
Thank you for answering the question in a such appropriate way! It helped me more than Adam's answer!
Thanks again!
Ceca ;)

Hello Emma,
'Help' has more than one meaning. Look up the word in the Cambridge Dictionaries Online box at the right-hand side of the page and look at the three different definitions of it as a verb. Can you see which one is being used in this sentence?
