Do you live in a country which has a king or queen? Did you have to learn the names of kings and queens in history at school? Are the names for family members more specific in your language than in English? And do tell us about your family!

Language level

Intermediate: B1

The German and the English language have the same roots so the concept of describing family relations are the same.
The last royal person we learned was Wilhelm II which reign ended after world war 1. Since then we are a democracy without any royals.

We had to learn presidents and chancellors in the German history. The people who have taught us them always said they prepare for life but I've never needed this information and therefore forgotten a lot about it.

There was a king Nicholas II in my country a hundred and one years ago but in that time the revolution happened and he with his family were killed. At school we should have been studying the names of kings/queens and dates of their rules.

Hi ,
In my country we don´t have royal Family officially , but our governor , deputy and senador spent our Money from tax living a life like a royal Family , a lot of luxury living in mansion , luxury cars .

Yes I live in England so we have the British Royal Family,

We had a Imperial family during many time. We were a Portugal colony until 1822. Then, our prince Dom Pedro proclaimed independence. We had two emperors, dom Pedro I and his son Dom Pedro II until the proclamation of republic in 1899. We have to study many details since Brazil-colony until present days.

We don't have royal family in of Brazil but of the start our nations the family real of portugal had the government state. Today the leader our govern is president. We have diversity problems but I believe in Brazil.

I've got three dogs and a cat, because I live in the countryside, then, they have a lot space to run around. I love animals, but I disagree to look after pet as a person, people is more important than animal.

We never had a royal family, however, before the republic was proclaimed, The Ottoman Empire was governed by monarchy/sultanate so we had to learn the padishah names as well as presidents of the republic in history at school. The names for Empire family members are as specific as yours and they put the numbers before the padishah names to indicate the hierarchical structure of the dynasty. It was so complicated and hard to memorise

All the best

Hi teacher...IWant to know what means thbexpression down earth ..that Tess said about prince philip

Hi nemogue,

Tess says that the prince is 'down to earth', and this means that he is quite a normal and sensible person, not one living in an unrealistic way or with unrealistic ideas.

Best wishes,
