Indoor Sports Scene 2

Ashlie and Ellie have a great time on the indoor snowboarding slope, but it turns out climbing isn't as easy as Stephen thought...

Do the Preparation task first. Then watch the video. Next go to the Tasks and do the activities. If you need help, you can read the Transcript at any time.

Before you watch

Think about the following questions:

  • Have you ever tried snowboarding or rock climbing?
  • Where do people usually do these sports?
  • Are you afraid of heights?

Now watch as Ashlie and Ellie try snowboarding, and Joe and Stephen start climbing.

Stephen: OK, what are we going to do next? I know Ellie wants to go snowboarding and Joe wants to go on the climbing wall.

Ashlie: Well, I’ve got a good idea. Why don’t Ellie and I go snowboarding, and you and Joe go on the climbing wall. What do you think, kids?

Ellie: Sounds good!

Joe: Great!

Stephen: We’re here at an indoor sports centre with our cousins Ellie and Joe.

Ashlie: We were going to the beach, but it’s raining, so we’ve come here

Stephen: That’s the British summer for you! But this is a great place to do fun sports inside.

Ashlie: Come on then, let’s go and have some more fun. We’ll see you guys later. Bye!

Stephen: You need to be fit to be a good climber. I know I’m going to be good at this, so if you’re not sure what to do, just watch me.

Joe: Don’t we need to get the climbing gear on?

Stephen: Oh yes, of course... Excuse me. Hi! We need some rope.

Instructor: Hi, guys. Have you climbed before?

Stephen: Well, Joe’s new to all this so he could do with some help, but I’m a quick learner, so don’t worry about me.

Instructor: Well, let’s get you in some gear. Some harnesses. Your right leg goes through the right hole and your left leg goes through the left hole. Pull this up to your waist for me. There you go.

Joe: OK, what’s this for?

Instructor: It’s to keep you safe. We’re going to fix the rope to the end of the harness and stop you from falling.

Stephen: Come on, Joe, let’s give it a go. Don’t be scared, just follow me. I know I’m going to be a good climber.

Ashlie: Oh, oh, and we turn! Oh no! Here I go! Here I go! How do I stop? That was awesome! And you’re so good at this, Ellie!

Ellie: Thanks! So are you. But I’m freezing.

Ashlie: I know! It is so cold.

Ellie: It’s a bit different from a day at a beach, but great fun!

Ashlie: Shall we have another go?

Ellie: Yeah. I might try turning next time.

Ashlie: Come on then, I’ll race you to the top.

Instructor: Fantastic, Joe! Just move your right foot up to the next hold. Just one more step.

Joe: I made it! I made it to the top!

Instructor: OK, Stephen, I just want you to move your right hand up to the next hand hold.

Stephen: I can’t. I can’t move!

Joe: It’s OK, Stephen, just don’t look down.

Stephen: What do you mean don’t look down? How can I not look down?

Instructor: OK, Stephen, just calm down. We’ve got you on the line. You’re going to be fine.

Joe: Don’t be scared, Stephen! I’ll come and help.

Stephen: Don’t be scared? I’m terrified! Help! Ashlie! Get me down!

Task 1

Task 2

When they're deciding what to do at the sports centre, Stephen, Ash and their cousins use expressions like:

I've got a good idea.     Why don't ... ?
What do you think?     Sounds great!

Task 3

Language level

Intermediate: B1
Upper intermediate: B2

Good evening, everyone.
Although I like sport and extreme sports I have never do snowboarding or climbing. Actually I have tried once to do snowboarding but it was a mess and I wasn't so brave to try again at that time, but still go to the mountain and I did some sports winter there but for me is enough just do sledging.
Those are outdoors sports, but sometimes as you would see these are could do it inside,
and usually, are mountain sports, but some places like this one could provide as those sports without need to be on the mountain.I have never been afraid of the heights but now it depends if you are going to climb on the really height mounts then it might be afraid if have a look down then you might get afraid but if you are not have a look down then you might not be.

Laundries with one or more styling machines by reference -

I can fully understand Ash , stephen and Rob ,too .while speaking
but when the instructor starts to speak ,I couldn't understand most of his speech ...So why that happens with me
Note;it happened before with me in videos in section Business & Work.

Hello basant emad eldin,

Ashlie, Stephen and Rob are all used to speaking very clearly, and you're also more used to their voices because you've listened to them a lot more. The other people in the videos are mostly new for you, and some of them are not used to being on video, so don't have as much practice speaking as clearly as the others.

Even though it's difficult, I'd encourage you to pay special attention to these other people, as they are good examples of the way some native speakers speak. If you use the transcript to help you understand what they say and pay attention to the ways they pronounce words and phrases, it should (slowly) help your listening comprehension improve.

Keep up the good work!

what kind of movies do you like?

Hello. And Bye.

Sorru. I am having diffcult to do the task 2. After putting the expressions in the blanks, they appear again in the options to choice.

Hello again simone,

Yes, sorry about that – there's a little trick you must use for this to work. After you have moved a first item to a group, you must first click or press on the item you want to move and then (and this is the important part) you must click or press on top of the small hand at the right end of the first item's box for it to enter the group without making the first item leave.

It's a bit difficult to describe, but very easy to do once you understand it. If you need me to describe it again, please let us know.

All the best,
