Do you have lots of online friends? And do you know all of those friends in real life? Is online friendship different from real life?

Language level

Intermediate: B1

Peter: thank you! I got it:)

I have many friends on Facebook that i know in real life and they are real friends from childhood until now and I have also my colleagues at work on Facebook and some other people that are not my friends but friends of my friends or colleagues that i have less interact with them but we talk on Facebook from now and then and congratulate or sympathy on occasions and feasts. As Facebook is network to know people and their news , share you ideas and comment on theirs. Therefore , it lacks the kind of privacy somehow.Everyone shares what he wants to share and everyone could see anyone's friends and can add them and share opinions and so the network grows bigger and bigger but not in real life , it's just online . For me I tend to not share any privacy issues on my page just general stuff as I have many friends not true friends and I don't know them well. Really I hope to get contact with Rob , the language Expert , I really like him and his way of teaching in" word of the street ". I hope I know more about him what did he do to become a teacher ? I know that his first job was a waiter before college I suppose. Really I look forward to be like him one day and to have that positive attitude and enjoy teaching.

The true friends are those who shared the childhood together ,those friends we can never forget them. Online you can know with whom you are dealing and sometimes become unsafe. I have some online friend but I never reveal to them what early I think.

Now the world is the small village any small mistake is a big issue. So think twice before making online friends.

Hi peter, i need your advices , i am preparing IELTS acadimic test , i did it last time but i fail, the university request 6.5 but i got only 5.5.My weakness were on reading part, it was very fast I can’t catch on the 3 paragraphs in 01 hour only, really it was short time to complete everything .Please if do you have any advices to let me improve my reading I will be very thankful.
I registered for TOEFL for next exam I am thinking that TOEFL will easy for me.

Hi atmane,

In terms of preparing for an exam, the best thing you can do is to analyse what kinds of texts are used (letters, adverts, articles etc) and what kinds of tasks are set (filling the gaps with vocabulary or grammar words, ordering paragraphs, answering multiple-choice questions etc). Once you know this, you can start to practise with those kinds of texts and those kinds of tasks.  Try also to get hold of some past papers or practice tests of the exam you're going to take and to work through these - this will help in general with your preparation, but it will also specifically give you a sense of how much time you have and how to organise that time.

I wouldn't say TOEFL and IELTS are necessarily different levels of difficulty.  Both are exams designed to test a range of different levels and to provide a result which reflects your current level, as opposed to pass/fail exams which test whether you have reached a certain level or not.

Best wishes and good luck,

Do you have lots of online friends? And do you know all of those friends in real life? Is online friendship different from real life?
I have few online friends. I don’t treat with all friends in real life because they are in another countries. Actually I talk with them rarely . I read their comments and their ideas only on the facebook and some times congratulate or support them in their occasions.I get the news about my neighbors who they live in different countries such as stories of my cousins, uncles, grandparents and news of my nephew or niece.
I don’t believe that there is friendship on the social media. The friendship achieved only in the real life by treatment between people in several situations,in sadness, happiness, rich case, poor case, whatever ethics, religion, color. The friendship is sophisticated concept no one can restrict in groups of words, icons, emotions that sent by internet.

I have a question about noun phrases.  Where are they in the followin:
I want to be a chef in a restaurant.  I like to work with people.  I like good food.  I am creative.
I want to be an office worker.  I like regular hours.  I like people.  I need a job in an office.
Thank you!  Kathy

Hello Palm1234,

You can find a very clear definition of noun phrases here - take a look at it and try to identify the noun phrases yourself in your sentences.  If you want to post your ideas in the comments section then we'll be happy to comment on them for you!

Best wishes,
