Literature is GREAT - Part 1

Shakespeare, Dickens and more... Britain's literary history is world class, and Richard speaks to experts about some of the country's greatest writers.

Task 1

Which of these things does Richard do?

Task 2

Which sentences are true?

Task 3

Make sentences from the video by putting the words in the correct order.

Task 4

Use must/can/might + present tense for present possibilities, and must/might/can + have + past participle to talk about possibility in the past. Use the negative if you need it.

Thank You, PeterM! I have understood about the verb tenses, but I don't understand why but. Dickens was very popular at his time. His books were published in his time and are publishing now. Why but?

Hello OlgaM,

We often see people who were popular in their day but who then become less popular as time goes by. DIckens is a writer who does not fit this pattern because he is still popular today. It would be fine to use 'and' here instead of 'but'. It all depends upon whether or not you think it is surprising that Dickens' popularity has remained high after his death.

Best wishes,

Thank you very much!

I like to read classic books because they give you so many fascinating insights into your own self and human relationships in general. I know such English writers as Oscar Wilde, Daniel Defoe, Agatha Christie, J.R.R. Tolkien, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling and many more. As for the English writers, in general, and not only the British ones, I’m a fan of Ernest Hemingway. I’m really excited to read his works in the original.
Considering the fact that I was growing up in the bilingual environment, there are actually authors from two countries in my native languages, Ukrainian and Russian. So, the most famous Ukrainian writers are probably Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko and Lesya Ukrainka. The greatest Russian writers are Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who is one of my favourite classics, Lev Tolstoi and Alexander Pushkin. Of course, this list is way longer and it’s a pity that there’s so much to read in the world and so little time for us to live.

I think that modern and contemporary English literature is great! Ishiguro, for example, is one of my favourite. I've read "A pale view of the hills" at least 4 times, and it always make me feel disturbed. I also enjoy Welsh and his most representative characters (the junkies from Edinburgh). The writer is not a real master but he knows how to keep the writer "nailed" to the book. Italian literature is also very important, but at the moment I cannot see writers as good as the anglosaxon or spanish ones.

I read all the books written by Rosamunde Pilcher. I love them.
The writer was able to describe places like the Cornwall's beaches, Inverness in Scotland, the English countryside and others so well that you can easily imagine to be there.

I read Sherlock Holmes which was writen by Conan Doyle. This novel is very interesting so many people in my country love it.

Among the British classic writers, my favorite is Jane Austin. I really adore her novels focused on stories about honest and endeavored women at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

I absolutely love to read, be it classics or contemporary. Life would certainly be different for me if books weren't part of it. I love to read Classic novels/poems because there is richness to how the writers played with words. I mean the romantiscism, humor and profoundness of the words in classic novels are fascinating to me. I have a long list of my favorite Classic English writers but these are the ones who easily came to mind- Jane Austen, Francis Hodgson Burnett, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mary Shelley, Lewis Carroll, Brontë Sisters, H.G. Wells, and Charles Dickens. I can recall two Classic writers in my country and they are Jose Rizal and Francisco Balagtas.

Hello LearnEnglish Team,

Thank you for the great job you are doing!
I just wonder if the video-related tasks in PDF format were removed from some "Listen&Watch" sections or if it is just a temporary technical problem. Here (Literarture is Great), for instance, the tasks in PDF do not appear.
Hope this problem can be solved :)

Best of luck to the whole team!
