1. Do you like learning languages?

Transcript item

Tina: Do I like learning languages? Yes, I do. But I'm a little bit lazy. In fact, I am lazy.
Jonathan: I think learning languages is really cool. People who can speak multiple languages are really cool. And they're also fun to learn. So, a definite yes.
Jo: Learning a foreign language is, um, really satisfying, I think. It's because it's really difficult, it's really challenging, but when you manage to communicate using that language, it's so satisfying.
Joanna: I love learning languages. I'd like to have time to learn more, but at school I did French and then I went on to university. I studied Spanish and Portuguese as my degree. And now I live in Catalonia in the north-east of Spain, so I speak Catalan and Spanish and English at home.
Kirk: I love learning languages. I mean, I've been doing it since I was a teenager, and, I don't know, I just find it really fascinating, all the differences and similarities in so many different ways between them.
Joanne: I think what I like is learning new words and new expressions and using them when I'm talking to people. So, yeah, for me, communicating with people in another language, I think that's really fun.
Kirk: My native language is English.
Tina: I speak English, that's my first language, I was born and bred in London. And I've been very fortunate to live in Italy, so I speak Italian, a little bit.
Kirk: I also speak Catalan quite well.
Joanne: I speak French. I speak German. And I speak a bit of Spanish. And my native language is English.
Jo: Yes, I speak Spanish, or Castilian, as we say here. I also speak Catalan because I live in Barcelona in Catalonia. And I speak a little bit of French, but I've … I can’t remember how to say 'forgotten'. I want to say 'I've forgotten French a little bit'. I think I need to work on that.
Kirk: I can get by in French.
Jonathan: Hello, everyone. I can speak a little Cantonese. Good morning, everybody. I speak Italian. Hello, everyone. I can speak a little Korean.
Kirk: I speak a little Guadeloupean Creole.
Joanna: Hello! In our house we speak in Catalan and English, and sometimes I speak in English and the girls and my partner answer in Catalan, and that's how we do it – half and half.
Kirk: I speak a little Tibetan. Years ago I spoke it better.
Jonathan: And I speak English. I forgot that one!
Kirk: I understand a little German, but don't speak it well.
Jo: I've forgotten it! I've forgotten it!

I love studying English. I am an English teacher, but I have a lot to learn yet. Although I'm graduate in Languages Portuguese-English and post graduate in English, I still have difficulties to understand movies and songs without subtitles. In my opinion having another Language, mainly English , is very important. I have already tried to learn German, but I gave up because it was too difficult to learn and I didn1t have so much time to spend studying.

Hi, my name is Carlos. I’m from Mexico. I love learning English, and it is the first foreign language I’m learning. Learning another language is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn about different cultures. I would love to learn more languages in the future, but step by step first English.

Of course I like to learn English, but be honest sometimes I'm lazy. I just learn when I have free time, so I feel that my English doesn't improve so much. I try to be more consistent right know, at least I will expose myself with English in a day.

Hi adnrrr,
Thanks for your comment! I think the key is to practise little and often, so it doesn't seem like a chore. Also, I'd recommend choosing something that you're interested in, to keep you motivated. So, if you like sport – read about sport in English, if you like travel – listen to a travel podcast. That way you're combining your interests with your English practice.
Good luck, and have fun!
Best wishes,

Hello bro,

Im a new english leaner. Before 2 years,i usually memorize new words every night. Its boring and difficult ,and i get no inproving ,so i give up leaning english. When i use Tiktok,i found english is very importent ,i miss many choices, such as get new jobs ,travelling ,or leaning the new techology .So i restart leaning english ,but im 32,sounds like late ,and i found my memory is worse than before ,but i think every thing ist late when you try doing something new.I suggest all english leaners persist to the end.

Hi scxgvdxcv,
Thanks for your interesting message. I agree that memorising lists of words can be difficult and boring! I think it's so important to see or hear the words in context, and watching videos can really help. In my opinion, you're never too old to learn. Good luck and keep up the great work!

Hello everyone,
That's a fascinating topic and I enjoyed it. I love learning languages. English is my second language but funny enough I'm using it a lot in my job and every day right now! I'm Iranian so I speak Persian but I live in France so I speak French too! So basically I'm fluent in English, French, and of course, Persian. I have some notices in Arabic, and a few words in German, Spanish, and Slovak ( because I'm very curious about languages).
I believe learning new languages opens a door for you to have endless possibilities to learn new things from new people and you get to meet different cultures. I think that's beautiful.
Thank you and have a good day,

Hi everyone. I am Elmedina. I am from Albania and I am 22 years old. I totally Love learning new languages, even though I don't always have the time or I am not consistent with my learning. I started learning English at school when I was like 10 years old. Besides English, I also learned Italian at school, I was also very good at Italian, almost level B2 I would say. Now, I study at a university in Belgium, so I also had to study Dutch, because most of my subjects are in Dutch, French, and German. I want to have an international career, and that's why I want to reach at least a (strong) C1 level of English, so I am perfecting the language by reading, writing, grammar exercises etc. (I can also speak Turkish at level A2, and understand it at level B1)

Hi ElmedinaBr,

That's a lot of languages! You have obviously got a talent for learning. Do you like using all these languages equally, or is there any that is your favourite?

Of course I like to learn foreign languages, but I think I'm not really talented.
That's a pity because in my opinion it helps you a lot to immerse deeper into other cultures than without any language knowledge.

I learned English, Latin, French and Italian at school, but I've forgotten most of it.
Today I'm just concentrating on improving my English.

Hi Tagga, I don't think you aren't talented in foreign languages, maybe only a bit worried because you forgot the basics. I totally agre with you, knowing other languages also open your mind and help you reduce distances from different cultures. I am studying English and my next language will be Danish (not so easy). Let's keep learning. Bye.

I enjoy learning English and truly aspire to become multiligual. English is my first foreign language. Although I'm still improving, I'm eager to take on another foreign language. I believe Korean will be my next challenge. I hope to continually find interesting aspects in my English learning journey.

Hi Ginger131,

I think it's a great idea to study another language. In my experience, it really helps because it forces you to think about language in a different way. Learning theories also suggest that we learn by building up networks of associations, so learning other vocabulary and structures and sounds can help us with the other languages we know or are learning too.

Hello, everyone! I've been studying English sice January 2019. I didn't know anything about English. I started to study because of aviation. I'd like to be a flight attendant. So, today, I like to study English so much. I can't speak very well, but I'm happy beacuse I can communicate with other people, I can read many texts... I believe that my English would be better, but I try everyday to include English in my daily routine. Thanks for read my message.

Hi Elineide,

It's really good to have an aim like you do ... to become a flight attendant. How many languages do you need to know to become one, apart from English? And by the sounds of it you are doing loads to improve your English. Well done, and I hope that your dream comes true soon.

I love learning lanuages
in fact i started learning English as a I am slef-taught, after i got to a level where im staisfied by myself I stopped the learning and I focused on my college, I discoverd that I need to go back to learn as soon as possible.
I think now learning is a continuous process beacuse I am not a native speaker and my aim is to speak like them but my problem is and still a procrastination.

I tried to learn korean but I also stopped i think i lost passion for it but im not regreting anyway.

I think you are right nouraa99, learning a language is an on going process and to improve you need to keep at it. Even if it's watching a film in the language that you are learning, with subtitles, it helps. Do you have to use English at college?

Hello, Jonathan!
Thank you for your answer.
Now I prefer learning English because I have the basic knowledge and also because it's a widespread language.
But I think that other languages will be also important in my life.

Hi Darya,

Thank you for adding your voice message. It's interesting that our attitude towards learning a foreign language can totally change at different times in our life, as you described. I hope that for you, English learning is not just a necessity but perhaps can be somehow interesting or enjoyable too!

Which do you prefer learning, out of English, German and Spanish?

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for your reaction to my comment. Yes, you are right, studying English for me now is an interesting process. In additional to that I can improve my professional skills and get new useful knowledges.
I prefer learning English because I have the basic. But, it seems to me, German is more logical. Spanish is like a melody at all)).
