1. How do you sleep?

Transcript item

Joanne: Sleep is really important to me, so I always go to bed early to make sure that I get enough sleep.

Jo: At the moment it's a bit more difficult because I’ve got quite an active brain and I wake up at five o'clock in the morning, but normally I do sleep well.

Joanna: Unfortunately 'No' is the simple answer to that question for me. At the moment I don't get enough sleep. I think you can probably tell by the dark circles under my eyes.

Joanne: For me, seven hours is a minimum, but ideally I like to sleep for eight hours.

Jo: OK, so I've got a theory about this and I always try to sleep nine hours, which is amazing, impossible in the week. Or seven and a half hours or six hours is quite good.

Joanna: I think they say eight hours is the ideal amount of sleep. That, for me, would just be impossible these days. I'd be happy with six or seven hours in a row. So continuous hours, that would be amazing.

Jo: My theory is that the number of hours' sleep you have should divide by 1.5. And that's because a sleep cycle is 1.5 hours, so if I wake up in the middle of a cycle, maybe I'm dreaming or, I feel like it just makes me feel really, really tired and grumpy.

Joanna: It is quite easy for me to get up in the morning because usually I wake up at five o'clock, half past five, and then I'm ready to get up at six, and start my day. My daughter goes to school early, so I'm up with her, having breakfast and then I usually go for a run to really wake me up properly.

Joanne: On weekdays I always set my alarm at 6.40 a.m. and I must say, it is quite hard to get out of bed. But then at weekends, I don't have to get up, so I don’t set my alarm clock, but I still wake up early, usually before seven, which is quite annoying.

Jo: Um, 'No' is the answer!

In this video, some of our friends and colleagues talk about how they sleep.

  • Do you sleep well?

I don´t sleep well, I usually wake up at 3 a.m and go back to sleep as soon as possible

What's your ideal amount of sleep?

9 hours or more will be amazing

Is it easy for you to get up in the morning?

Sometimes, specially in winter

  • Do you sleep well?

I don't sleep well either. Sometimes my dog is restless at night and it disturbs       my sleep.

  • What's your ideal amount of sleep?

For me, the ideal amount of sleep per night would be about 9 hours

  • Is it easy for you to get up in the morning?

Sometimes it's easier and sometimes it's harder. It depends on whether I'm tired when I wake up. In the summer, when it's light and warm, it's easier to get up than in the winter, when it's dark and cold.

It depends on the day if it is weekend then i am getting enough sleep for sure but if it is week day then for me it is difficult to get enough sleep. The idle amount of sleep is 7-8 hours but for me it is atleast 8 hours. I wake up easily in early morning if i went to bad earlier.

  1. I sleep well the most times, sometimes if I'm too nervous or excited for the next day its hard to me to fall asleep, but it happens very few times.

  2. For me, the ideal amount of sleep is 8 hours. If I have a lot to do, the minimum that seems healthy to me is 6 hours.

  3. It's usually quite easy for me to get up in the morning, but more difficult when I slept late last night.

Hi Stephanie,
I really enjoyed listening to your voice message. It reminded me that when we have young children, we often don't get as much sleep as want or need. My kids are grown up now, but when they were little, they used to wake up so early in the morning and I didn't get enough sleep for many years. It was really hard. But now they sleep for hours, and I'm the one who wakes up early ;-)
Best wishes,

Do you use an alarm clock to help you get up in the morning? I have one on my phone which I sometimes use ... especially if I am travelling somewhere and need to catch a train or plane.

Hi burakulia!

How lovely to listen to your voice message and thank you for sharing your audio with us.

I have a similar problem at the moment ... I don't have any curtains on my windows as I've recently had new windows put in so it's really bright outside early, to be honest to me ... it still feels like the middle of the night! I also live in the roof space of an old house by the seaside and the seagulls are having a whale of time on the roof - loads of squawking going on! Sorry you have been having nightmares ... I don't often get them so I'm quite lucky.

Hi, I normally sleep 8 hours per night, for me its good, but it seems to me that minimum time to sleep is 7 hours. For me, honestly, isn't easy get up from my bed in the mornings, because I've a lot of affection for sleeping, even there are moments where the alarm from my phone sounds pretty high and I can't get up.

Hi, I've always had a problem with falling asleep. I couldn't fall asleep immediately after going to bed and I woke up very late but I used to sleep all the night. Now I have a huge problem with sleeping. I cannot fall asleep and than I woke up after two or three hours and I have to get up and drink some water. And again I try to sleep. I usually wake up at half past seven. I have no problem with falling asleeping in the morning. I think I know my problem - menopause. And I have really strange dreams.

Hi!
Personally i sleep well, i don´t have problems when i go to the bed and close my eyes. Usually i try to sleep 8 hrs, i go to bed at 9:50 and wake up at 5:50. When the pandemia started, my anxiety got worse so i couldn´t sleep well, i had insomnia but i started to do pilates, yoga and meditation, meditation was my salvation for insomnia. Now i just go to the bed, take a depp and slow breathing, relax all my body, close my eyes and the sleep takes over me, and in the morninig is not difficult to me wake up and start my day with a lot of energy.
what about u?

Hi Val76,

I know what you mean. Sometimes I do meditation just before sleeping, and it helps me to clear my mind and drift off to sleep. In fact, sometimes I fall asleep in the middle of the exercises, that's how good they are :D

Hi !
I have personaly slept well since the beggining of the holidays. Quitting the scholar routine has allowed me to sleep from whenerver I want, to whenever I want.
I fall asleep very fast, and I don't think about it, it's more like an automatic habit.
So I often sleep about 8 to 10 hours a night. That is very pleasant and so nice to feel rest in the morning.

I usually lie in bed early but I've got a bad habit. I am used to watching TV lying in bed before sleeping so the time I sleep depends on TV programme.
The prevalent time of my sleeping is after midnight and I usually get up at 6:00 in the morning. The most I sleep is five hours a night which is my ideal amount of sleep.
seldom I sleep early before midnight but then I get up too early, at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and the whole day I feel bad.
I've decided to keep my bad habits because I feel better when I sleep later than early!

Lately, I don't really get enough sleep. Sometimes , I don't sleep for three days. I think because of my insomnia. Whenever I can't sleep , I always try everything just to fall asleep, such as meditating, not using my phone, drinking warm milk before bed ..etc. but really nothing happens. I just want to get enough sleep like 8-9hrs a day . It's really easy for me to get up in the morning especially if there's something important to do on that day.

Hey, well since my work has quite a hard schedule my resting time is not the best. One week I work in the day so I wake up at 5a.m and go to bed at about 10p.m, but when I'm working in the night I sleep just 3 hours and is quite difficult sometimes, though despite all this it is not hard for me to wake up in the morning and I don't feel tired.

Hey, good morning all!

I'm actually not sleeping very well lately. I have a dog that wakes me up several times during the night, so it happens that i only sleep few hours at a time, which is kind of bad for my health

My ideal mount of sleep, I think i could say about 7h-8h hours os sleep.

It's pretty easy for me. Sometimes my dog wakes me up around 6am (before the alarm clock even goes off) and I use that as an excuse to wake up already.

Hi) I would say that for the last few weeks I've not been sleeping well. I think it's due to certain personal problems. Because of it, I've been having bad dreams and it's awful. As that it makes me feel tired throughout the day

My ideal amount of sleep is around 8 hours. Also I believe that schedule of sleep is important too. I used to go to the bad at 11 pm and wake up at 7 am. And it was really good for me. Because I had enough energy to start my day.

It used to be easy. But now I struggle with getting up in the morning. I suggest that if my cat didn't want to eat so early I would only get up in the afternoon

Is it easy for you to get up in the morning?
No, Because i'm living in a hostel, so you know that in hostel we are unable to sleep before 12. But yes everyday i want to sleep early, around 10 PM because if sleep around 10PM then we can easily walk up early in the morning.

Hi nguyentiendat,

It must be a very hard routine! Do you always have the night shift, or switch between day and night shifts? I would definitely find it hard to change my bed time like that. I hope you can find a good job that works well with your daily routine.

Sleep is really important as when I had to have 3 or four hours of sleep I felt really I dont have any concentration or focus on my daily life events and I felt reaaly as if my brain is inactive so I always try to have the ideal amount of 8 hours if possible and most of the times ofcourse the minimum of 6 or 7 hour of sleep at night. once watched a medical training program broadcast on TV, and because of the special importance of night sleep and the need to perform the best healing function in different body organs during the night, the doctor advised people who suffer from insomnia to take sleep medicines. With Best Wishes Arezoo

Personally, I try to take care of my sleep in the best way possible, cause I believe in the importance of it. Most of the time I sleep very well and I don't have difficulty waking up in the morning. I would consider myself a morning lark since I am the most productive in the morning. My ideal amount of sleep is a minimum of 8 hours of sleep per night. I always go to bed and wake up at the same time every day (even during weekends) to not disturb my circadian rhythm.
