Please look at the following dialogues which ones are taken from Big City Small World is a soap opera.

Johnny: Actually, I’m not really here to eat, or anything. I’m supposed to be meeting someone.
Sarah: Oh...well...I’m just supposed to be meeting someone here actually...
Olivia: Not him, by any chance?

I have found the meaning of “supposed to” in the Cambridge dictionary but I am not clear of that. Could you describe the used of that word?

Hi meheee2008uiu,

The meaning here is the second meaning in the dictionary, which has to do with intention. Johnny is saying that he came to the cafe to meet someone. He could have said, "I came to meet someone", but "supposed to" often indicates that things have not happened as expected. In this case, he doesn't see the person he had intended to meet, and saying "supposed to" indicates this.

Today, science is an increasingly specialised and compartmentalized subject, the domain of experts who know more and more about less and less.

I read the above sentence in a IELTS practice book. Here I don't comprehend the meaning of more and more about less and less. Can you describe it, by any chance?

Hello meh,

The meaning is as follows:

'...who know more and more (information) about less and less (of the world)'

In other words, they gain great information about a certain area, but that area become smaller and smaller and more specialised.  The ending to this sentence is usually as follows:

'...more and more about less and less until, in the end, they know absoutely everything about nothing.'

Thank you for your answer, but I am not clear some parts of your answer. Firstly, you mentioned “but that area become smaller and smaller and more specialized”. My question is that how an area becomes smaller and smaller. Could you please give an example which helps me to understand?
Secondly, I am totally unable to comprehend the meaning of "they know absoutely everything about nothing". Please could you describe it elaborately?

Thank you

Hello meheee2008uiu,

As you become more specialised, your area of expertise becomes less general.  For example, a generalist historian might learn about the history of a wide range of countries, while a specialist might only focus on something very specific, such as the role of women in English family life during the industrial revolution.  This is how the subject becomes smaller and smaller.  Knowing more and more is simply become an expert (in this small field).

Taken to its logical conclusion, this leads to the joke that an expert knows absolutely everything (more and more taken to an extreme) about nothing (less and less taken to an extreme).  This is not a serious statement, but rather a joke.

I hope that clarifies it for you.  I don't think I can explain it any more clearly than that.
