How do you feel about queuing?

If you’ve been to Britain, do you think it’s true what Tess and Ravi said – are the British good at queuing?

How about queues in your country? Do people queue up politely or do they jump the queue? Do you jump the queue?

We’d love to hear from you - write your answers in the comments.

I'm looking for some assistance regarding uses of prepositions, how to use 'in, at, for, from' properly ?
In this podcast, I tried to learn use of in and at for example;
at a bus stop
at an airport
at a station
at a shop
in a bank
in a restaurant
in a post office

My question is - why 'at' used with shop and 'in' use with bank? and rest all..

Hi Zaigham,

The choice here is not dependent on the place (bank or shop), but rather your own location vis-à-vis that place:

  • 'in' means 'inside the building', and we can say 'in a bank' and 'in a shop'.
  • 'at' means 'at that location', and is more general.  We can say 'at the bank' or 'at the shop' and it tells us the location in more general terms - we could be inside the shop, outside the shop, in front of the shop, near the shop etc.

I hope that clarifies it for you.

Best wishes,

Peter, it helps me. Thanx.

I've been in UK for 3 weeks and found they British are really polite and very calm in queues. But in my country - not all the people really like queues, until and unless they are bound to. Jumping the queues is common as well by making excuses of urgency etc.

ii I'm Sandra a new comment..i make IELTS In June and now I'm frighting I wish that every thing goind good for me
for my self I think that I'm not ready to take it ...I'm afraid

Hi Sandra,

I can't say anything about how you will do, of course, but I can point you in the direction of some great materials to help you prepare. If you go to the British Council's Take IELTS site you'll find practice materials, sample exams, tip and much more.  I'm sure the materials there will help you to prepare with confidence for the exam.

Good luck!

Actually I wish to live in Britain . I like orders and queuing . Really it's good that everyone has his turn and be polite . In my beloved country Egypt , people never wants to queue up . there is always a mess in everything . some of course like queuing but they miss their turns because of the impolite people who jump on queue and disobey orders. Some organizations make people line up and wait for their turn ,they have very strict regulations but the issue I wish , is that the concept of queuing be in everyone's belief . It is something good to have in your ethics. Orders and politeness is nice thing to have especially when people are educated so why they insist on chaos !!! For me I like queuing and I sometimes spend the time chatting with people and talking about politics or any social problems but I always miss my turn because of some people insist to jump on turn and saying that they are in hurry and saying words like please and so ... so what i have to do is to wait ..

I agree with you littlemoon86. we are suffering from chaos everywhere.even in our daily life. and people now have to pay bribes to accomplish their work. i know that it's shameful to say that but this is the reality. corruption has spread everywhere. my definite question is why people do this. what are the differences between us and those cultured people. and what do we have to do to fix this problem!!!!

Hı everY1 ! Im from Azerbaıjan and unfortunately ı should say that we also have problems at queuıng . Nowadays especıally underground full of people :( and the jumpıng theır queu :(

hi everyone,

I dislike queuing and dislike the persons who jump queue, but in my country, most of people like queuing, especially for big sales in shopping mall, famous restraunts, sightseeing location, and in some ocassions, like public holidaies, for example, our importantest holiday - spring festival, every guy working in another city will need to buy a airticket/realway tickets to go back his/her hometown, to enjoy the holiday with family together.
