1. Are you good at interviews?

Two women about to shake hands

Interviews are a chance for you to show your personality and strengths. But perhaps that's easier said than done. Do you think you are good at interviews?

Here is what some of our team said.

Depends on what the interview has been for! For me, I'm quite comfortable in those kinds of situations because, first of all, I've found the questions are all quite similar. I try and always prepare in advance by researching the company, so that I've got an idea of what they do. Second, I also try and treat them like a person and not someone I should be scared of. So I guess I try and be myself as much as possible.
Harry

Not really. I have had some successful interviews but a lot of unsuccessful ones as well. I find it hard to think quickly and clearly when I'm nervous, and I never know if my answer is what the interviewers are expecting to hear. But I would say that preparing well is a great help. I'd definitely like to improve my interview skills.
Jonathan

I really don't like interviews. I find them very stressful so I don't think I'm good at them. I need to work very hard to do well in an interview and I have to really focus, prepare a lot and practise a lot because I don't think I'm naturally good at interviews at all.
Jo

Here are some of the phrases they used. Some of these might be useful when you express your own opinion.

  • (It) depends on …
  • I'm quite [comfortable] in those kinds of situations.
  • I try and be myself.
  • I would say that [preparing well is a great help].
  • I find it hard to [think quickly].
  • I find them [very stressful].
  • I don't think I'm naturally good at interviews at all.

How about you?

  • Are you good at interviews?
  • Tell us about an interview that you had. What questions were you asked? How did you feel? How did it go?

Write a comment and let us know. Replying to other users' comments is a great way to practise interaction and conversation skills so be sure to press reply and write one to a comment that you find interesting.

I've had an interview recently. It went very well actually. At the beginning, I was a bit stressful, nervous and excited. Although I have a panick attack, I overcame this. It was about IT. I answered the questions smoothly. Actually at first, I thought I wouldn't be able to pass. But the feedback astonished me. After I started to the job, everything was a disappointment. The aura, environment was seriously, unexpectedly awful.

Hi Servet,

I'm so sorry that the actual job has been a disappointment. Are you still working there?
It sounds like you excelled in the interview - well done - one thing I'd like to ask you, is it normal for them to give you feedback on how you did? Is this straight after the interview or because you got the job?

I do hope the job has improved for you.

Best wishes,
~ Tina

I always find interviews very stressful, and as someone said, I don't think that I'm naturally good at interviews at all. Reading the opinion of people here, help me because it makes me realize that most people prepare seriously the interviews, it is not something you can go just like that. So for my next interviews, I will prepare the best that I can, and also try to consider the interviewers as normal persons, to relax

I have extensive experience with both online and in-person interviews, and I found them all to be quite stressful, despite thorough preparation. I believe this stress stemmed from increased hormone secretion. However, conducting research and understanding the company interviewing you can significantly boost your confidence.

One key takeaway from my experience is that interview questions tend to be quite similar, with only minor rephrasing from different agencies. Therefore, it’s crucial to do your homework, as this will help you stay focused and provide more effective answers during the interview.

Recently I had my first interview in English. I really felt very nervous because I'm begging speaker I don't know how I answered to the question but I think that interviewer understood me. A few weeks ago they call me for to take trial job. I can't believed.

Sorry mistake on my writing, I'll appreciate your review.

The first time I had a job interview, I felt too much anxious for I didn't know exactly how to handle it.  Many questions remained without any answers because I was scared and inexperienced. When I left, I decided from that day on, to train myself. Thanks to God,  today I feel easy during interviews.

Hi Nolito,
It sounds as if your first interview was an important experience. It's true that training gives you confidence and helps you feel relaxed. I'm glad the whole thing is easier for you now!

For me the key for a good interview is confidence and preparation especially when the interview is with your second language it's always difficult to describe your self and your personality clearly with another language and that why Iam using This website right now and writing this , just to develop my skills to describe my self easily

Hi Babd,
I think being prepared is key and especially when it's in another language. I find it really helpful to video myself answering typical questions. Watching it back helps me identify what sounds good and what I could improve. I'm happy to read that practising here with us is helpful for you!
Good luck and best wishes,

Jo (LearnEnglish team)

I totally understand what you say. I am preparing an interview right now as I quitted my job two weeks ago, but I have found it hard to express myself. I used to have great interviews, but it happened that I stopped practicing English and I have lost confidence, hopefully, studying and practicing every day I can improve my English skills, not only in the interview as itself, also with the test that they ask to complete in order to get a job.

Hi Rochi,

What sort of job are you looking for?

We have lots of great resources on LearnEnglish to help you bring your English up to speed. And I wish you all the luck in the world to getting a new job.

It depends on the situation. Usually, when I want to think quickly and clearly, I’ll become nervous. This is especially true when I'm meeting someone for the first time. I agree with the importance of preparation. Like the cliché that “practice makes perfect,” we can try, and by doing so, we can confidently speak and even present to many people.

I did sometimes and at the first time it was difficult to me to express myself to others but am recently enjoying to  learn more about  the interviews

Thanks for sharing your voice message Lali! You're lucky that you haven't had to do many interviews. I think they're one of the most stressful things we can do professionally. But preparation can definitely help reduce the stress :-)

Best wishes,

I haven't had many opportunities to be on the other side of the table when it comes to interviews — the last time I was interviewed was twenty years ago. Since then, I haven’t been in a position to experience that process again.

Personally, i really dislike interviews for lots of reasons. First of all, i think employers do not trust candidates because if i mentioned on my CV that i'm good at something, it should mean i'm being honest (not telling lies or even what i wrote is a joke). So, they have to be confident and give those who apply for a job or any other test a chance to prove ther qualities and skills, by subjecting them to a test period. Secondly, when we're interviewed, most of us by nature are a little bit uncomfortable because we don't get a normal discussion, i mean questions-answers-comments from both sides. So, in my opinion, it's a bit embarrassing.

Ultimately, an interview is just a conversation with a potential employer, so try to relax and enjoy the experience.

The intervew is a big challenge for me as for a very shy person. I never feel confident talking to people whom I haven't known before. The worse thing is that I understand how important are my answers and it makes me nervouse. I am afraid of making mistakes and of course I do make them. For me it would much better if I can read the quastions and text my answers. In  this case I would have time to think and possibility to correct the mistakes

For me it´s difficult to do well in an interview because of emotions. I get really nervouus, so a am not able to thick as quick as it can be requiered, but i always

try to do my best.

I am not really good at interviews, and to be honest I never had one. But I know I am an anxious person so I won't be good at them, I start sweating, snapping my fingers and I freak out when I see people next to me or talks to me, and I forget what to say and I end up by saying the wrong idea.

For me , i am quiet cmfortable in those kind of situations because i have had some successful interviews . In the begining of my career , i didn't have  a self confedince so i did abad interview but after that i decided to be my self and don't pay attintion to how the others see me .so that i have had a good interview and got the job .But interviews in English stell a challeng for me because of my English so  now i am trying to develope my english skill .

Hi nour kh!

Thank you for your comment ... it's good to hear that you decided to be more yourself in interviews, I think that often people are trying to be the person they think the interviewer wants them to be so it is all a bit unnatural. I'm so pleased that you decided to contribute to the Learning hub too ... as it's a really great place to use your English and hopefully the more you join in, the more your English will develop!

After graduating from college, I have only attended two job interviews. The first one was with an American-funded enterprise when I was a new graduate. Apart from going through multiple rounds of interviews, what left the deepest impression on me was that I had to travel to another city for the interview, and the schedule was extremely early. I got up at around 4 a.m., took a train that departed at about 6 a.m., and then transferred between several subway lines. Finally, I arrived at the subway station closest to the interview venue. However, when I walked out of the subway car, I found that this station had as many as 14 exits. After going through a lot of trouble, I finally made it to the interview location—only 5 minutes away from being late.

I am not good at interviews most of the time because of my weak English and grammar. Although I prepare well for the interviews and have strong knowledge about the job and the company, I usually don’t perform well due to my weakness in English.

I would say I had dozens of interviews. Some of them were good, others not. I always feel stressed and unconfident during the interview. I hate the question about 'my weaknesses and strengths. Also, once I have been asked about what my colleague would say about me. Honestly, this is such a weird question. For this reason, I would be more than happy to share references.

Yeah! in general, interviews are quite stressing because you have to prove yourself beyond your limits while getting uncomfortable. The point is the person sometimes demand the answers with which you might not be agreeing upon. You have to work hard to for being clear and concise, preciese to, sometimes.
Overall its not a great experience being around a human being to answer them according to thier demands.

already in my life. That’s why I try to grow and develop all the time. Really I can say – yes, interview
can be stressful, you should learn about the company, their requirements for a candidate. You should show yourself, your skills, be smart, full of energy…
I just try to be myself, but a good self presentation is also important.
Now my dream is to get job in some international company. That’s why I`m here to practice and improve my English

Hey, I think that sharing your experience would be a great help for whose they fell onder stress in the interview. I am one of them. I really fell nervous and stressed while interview and most of the time I forgot everything I know. Would like to help me with some tips?
