Idioms and expressions

Have you ever heard an English expression where you understood the words, but still had no idea what it meant? If so, it was probably an idiom!

Idioms are phrases with meanings you can't guess from the individual words. For example, 'break the ice' means to start a friendly conversation – not to smash frozen water!

Idioms can be confusing, but they make language sound more natural and interesting. Some are centuries old, while others are brand new.

In this topic you can:

  • watch a video where people guess where some English idioms come from and what they mean, and share their favourite idiom
  • do a quiz to learn and revise some idioms and expressions
  • tell us about your favourite English idioms and idioms from your own language.

You can even practise your speaking by recording a voice message to share with us. So, let's get the ball rolling (that's an idiom, by the way)!
